LoveIsRespect.org produced a public service ad aiming to make people rethink the health of their relationship. The advertisement titled “Dating Abuse Affects 1 in 3 Young People” appeals to young adults in high school to college age groups who are in a relationship. The ad states “Dating abuse affects 1 in 3 young people. You deserve a safe and healthy relationship.” ( The purpose behind this writing is to analyze the LoveIsRespect.org ad, specifically in it’s use of Aristotle’s three appeals. Being a picture meant to tug on the heartstrings, the ad is full of pathos, but it still uses the ethos and and logos appeals to increase the credibility and persuasion of the ad. The ad pictures a collage of several pictures showing a note in the hands of young people with their description of what love truly is. The notes within their hands say a variety of things such as “Love is REALLY listening”, “Love is safe and supportive”, and “Love is respect”. The notes appeal to those who are in a relationship, or are looking to be in one, making them rethink what love actually means to them. On LoveIsRespect.org, the website of the organization behind the ad, it’s stated that “Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year”. Another moving point on the website points out “College students are not equipped to deal with dating abuse - 57% say it is difficult to identify and 58% say they don’t know how to help someone who is experiencing it”. These statistics are a logos appeal that ad scale to the issue. It’s easy to see that the pictures on the ad are designed to attract your attention and to play on your emotions, but the logos appeals are designed to make you want to do something about the
