According to Sujata (2017) “The story of sexual assault and victimization through social media has, unfortunately, become commonplace. Between the universality of cellphones with cameras and the widespread cultural adoption of social media, victims are often trapped in a wrath of character assassination and name-calling long after their assault.” (Sujata, 2017). To make matters worse, victims often feel overlooked by the criminal justice system. Social influence impacts the lack of understanding and awareness of sexual assault as a crime, for different reasons. The first reason is that most people just think “oh it’s just sex”. Individuals has a lack of understanding and awareness because they see it just sex, and take for example date rape or acquaintance rape, if you are in a relationship with someone the victim may think its ok because they are with that person, therefore does not report it and the person doing it may not have an understanding that it is a crime, because they see it as being with that person, so they are entitled to it.
