Crimes have been occurring throughout history since the beginning of time, criminal mishaps extend back to Cain murdering his brother Abel. However, over time new crimes more severe than murder have come about that have ripped the moral fabric of an individual’s whole being. Date rape, a topic that has been widely discussed in America has been occurring more and more frequently. Many individuals know little others know infinite amounts on the topic, yet there are still many misconceptions about the topic. In America date rape has become a growing epidemic on the rise, affecting men and women, causing physical damage, intense emotional effects, death and long-lasting effects on victims. One in four women has become victims of rape in their lifetime. (Nutrabio) Unlike ordinary rape, date rape uses other elements to find a way to get what is desired. Drugs and other substances that perpetrators use to subdue their victims for personal game can cause heart-wrenching effects. Rohypnol, a drug that has become very common in most rape cases has been in use for many years. Introduced in Europe in 1972 and produced by Hoffman La Roche in Mexico, Rohypnol was used as a sedative to give to patients for long surgeries. (Parrot 4) With drugs such as Rohypnol, XTC, and Ketamine victims will not be able to see, taste, or smell the drug once placed in a drink. Many common date rape drugs are particularly small, colorless, and can be slipped into a glass or a cup without notice. (6) Rohypnol being the strongest can leave its victim unconscious for up to 12 hours and causes amnesia for up to 20 hours.

The aftermath of rape is far more severe than the actual occurrence of rape for the victim. Constantly living in fear, questioning where and what he or she did wrong to have the perpetrator come after him or her, wondering what went wrong. After finally getting over the pain and recollection of what has happened, rape victims are still tortured with the lifelong effects of that one occurrence. Feeling powerless is a key long lasting effect that happens to the victim; he or she feels that since the rape he or she has become weak and inferior being robbed of his or her self-power, no longer being in control of his or her body, emotions, or life. (HealthyPlace) Living in fear is a long-lasting effect of date rape. Constantly checking over your shoulder and always being watchful of your surroundings; no longer being able to trust anyone because of the circumstances that the victim succumbed to. Trust issues can also arise from date rape. Date rape and rape can happen from anyone, by anyone, and to anyone. The love of special attention that is received from a favorite relative will seem so sweet and innocent in the beginning but no one can ever be too careful. Victims that do not want to end his or her life become solely dependent on drugs. Substance abuse is a common outlet for rape victims.
