III. Data Description
For our research, we used data samples provided by the IPUMS International database (Minnesota Population Center 2015). The data for Brazil comes from the ‘General Census of Geographic for Brazil’ that was conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics in the years 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010. The data for the United States comes from the ‘Census of Population and Housing’ conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000. The 2010 data comes from the ‘2010 American Community Survey’, also conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.
For the level of education of each individual, we used the internationally recoded educational attainment data found in IPUMS, which specifies the level of education completed by an individual. For our purposes, we transformed the data we had on the education completed by each individual into separate dummy variables for each level of education. Additionally, given that we investigated the relationship of education and income, we only used individuals of ages between 25 and 65, as this age group is expected to have an income.
Graphical representations of the distribution of percentages of our sample that have completed (no more than) a given level of educational attainment can be found in Figures 1 and 2.
