1. Explain what data mining and business analytics consist of and how they differ and resemble each other.
Data mining is a process of extracting data which cannot be identified using simple analysis. This process helps to extract different trends and patterns in large datasets using complicated mathematical algorithms. This kind of research are conducted to determine the type of problem, they help to have a good understanding of the problem. Saunders et al. (2007, p.134) warn that when conducting exploratory research, the researcher ought to be willing to change his/her direction as a result of revelation of new data and new insights. Even though it does not provide any final results it provides some details on the research topic with some exposure and depth in the topic. It is said that “Exploratory research tends to tackle new problems on which little or no previous research has been done” (Brown, 2006, p.43). In addition, it is to be considered that exploratory research is the initial research; it forms the basis for more conclusive research.
