(Bacon and Darwin) What is evolution? Evolution is the gradual development of something. Evolution is technically a theory although there is massive amounts of scientific evidence that it is real. Science has proved many parts of the theory right. Charles Darwin, a famous scientist, was one of the first to present this theory. “The theory of evolution by natural selection, first formulated in Darwin's book "On the Origin of Species" in 1859, is the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits.” (Lande) Basically, he believes that the earth is millions of years old and that everything living on earth adapted into what they are today. This theory is very controversial in our society though, because it goes against what is said in the Bible. Francis Bacon, an English philosopher, had four idols which explained ways in which human’s feelings and beliefs. This is one of the most researched and continued theory in our society. Charles Darwin was one of the first philosophers that presented his evidence. The science in this theory is overwhelmingly accurate. Not all people believe in this theory despite all the evidence. In Francis Bacon’s “The Four Idols,” his last idol the idols of theater do not particularly agree with Darwin’s theory of evolution. Natural selection is the main topic they have a hard time agreeing with because it goes against what is stated in the Bible. “Evolution by natural selection is one of the best substantiated theories in the history of science, supported by evidence from a wide variety of scientific disciplines, including paleontology, geology, genetics and developmental biology.” (Koza) Clearly, the idols of theater question Darwin’s theory of evolution the most out of the four
