Evolution Vs. Religion
(Bacon and Darwin) What is evolution? Evolution is the gradual development of something. Evolution is technically a theory although there is massive amounts of scientific evidence that it is real. Science has proved many parts of the theory right. Charles Darwin, a famous scientist, was one of the first to present this theory. “The theory of evolution by natural selection, first formulated in Darwin's book "On the Origin of Species" in 1859, is the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits.” (Lande) Basically, he believes that the earth is millions of years old and that everything living on earth adapted into what they are today. This theory is very controversial in our society though, because it goes against what is said in the Bible. This is one of the most researched and continued theory in our society. Charles Darwin was one of the first philosophers that presented his evidence. The science in this theory is overwhelmingly accurate. Not all people believe in this theory despite all the evidence. In Francis Bacon’s “The Four Idols,” his last idol the idols of theater do not particularly agree with Darwin’s theory of evolution. Natural selection is the main topic they have a hard time agreeing with because it goes against what is stated in the Bible. “Evolution by natural selection is one of the best substantiated theories in the history of science, supported by evidence from a wide variety of scientific disciplines, including paleontology, geology, genetics and developmental biology.” (Koza) Clearly, the idols of theater question Darwin’s theory of evolution the most out of the four

Throughout this course, we were exposed to many ideas about organism classification due to evolutionary linkages, survival of the fittest and random out comes. Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory often creates conflicts with religious teachings in particular, Christianity; many Christians disagree with Darwin’s theory that “man is not the most supreme creature on earth, but humans just evolved from a single cell over long periods of time.” Faith is intangible; it could simply be a belief. Christianity is just a belief, which is the same as Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory, since both of them cannot be proven; which means nobody is wrong, therefore we should be open minded to learn from them that way we could learn more about the world.…

Science claims that every living creature was made of an organism that changed over a period of time. To the current day some people continue to believe that the bible proves how we were created. Others, including myself feel that science evolved us from Apes to humans.…

Humans have a way of thinking that puts them above other living things. This way of thinking is how humans can freely express thoughts and how it is used to explore or solve different ideas. Freely expressing thoughts can lead to many important outcomes and discoveries. In Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the idea of evolution versus creationism is explored when Bertram Cates is arrested for teaching evolution to his students. The idea of freely expressing thoughts ties into evolution versus creation in the play because of how some of the characters view evolution and how people should be allowed to voice their thoughts on it.…

It is evident that all things change throughout time, but understanding the reason behind these changes can be infuriating. In Evolution for Everyone, David Sloane Wilson bonds the basic concepts of evolutionary theory with different disciplines such as: art, religion, language, and pro-social behaviors. Wilson establishes a unity between the evolutionary theory and the development of culture, language, art, and other disciplines.
