Darry is the most selfless person that has been written about. For example, when he and Pony were reunited at the hospital, Pony realized that “[Darry] didn’t make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks.” But, “[Darry] hadn’t cried in years, even when [their parents] died.” The fact that Darry cried because he was scared that he had almost lost another family member, shows the great amount of love Darry has for his family. Darry shows his caring side even to the people in the gang. Pony said “[Our] front door is always unlocked in case one of the boys is hacked off at his parents and needs a place to lay off and cool off.” Not only does this show how much Darry cares for his gang members, but it also shows how much Darry’s willing to give up in order for his gang mates to be happy and feel a sense of safety.
In The Outsiders, the author, S.E Hinton shows us what heroes are. Darry isn’t super strong, or have superpowers, but he’s more of a hero then anyone will ever be through their entire lives. Not all people can give up college, an athletic scholarship, become the parent figure to two high school boys, work multiple part-time jobs, allow anyone to come into their house and crash for the night, or become a leader of a group, or in this case a gang, and take care of his two younger siblings all at the same time.
