Darnay Vs Sydney Carton Essay

Protagonists are the ones we look up to whenever we read a good book or watch a good movie or Tv series. The protagonist gives the reader an ideal or virtue to aspire to have, and makes us want to see them succeed with their goals . In some stories, there can be more than one protagonist or can be hard to find out who is the true protagonist. In A Tale of Two Cities, there are two characters that stand out to be the main protagonist. Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay both face trials that have immensive consequences to their characters and livelihoods. However, Sydney Carton is the true protagonist of A Tale of Two Cities. The main protagonist should be someone who changes throughout the book into a better man, and the reader sees this the most through Sydney Carton. At the beginning of the novel, Mr. Carton was seen as someone who didn’t “care for no man on earth”,especially Charles Darnay and was not loved by anyone (A Tale of Two Cities, 63). Charles may move the plot along, but that quality does not make a protagonist. A protagonist faces inner and outer struggles in order to achieve a goal. For Sydney Carton, his ultimate goal was to be happy and was faced with the struggle to try and find people he would care about. Charles is a main character as much as Lucie is a main character. They both have huge roles in the story, but don’t have an overall goal or struggles like
