Jespersen v. Harrah’s Operating Company 2006, the plaintiff Darlene Jespersen, was dismissed from her position as a bartender at Harrah’s Reno casino. Both men and women had to follow a particular dress code; black pants, white shirt, a bow tie, and black shoes. The grooming standards were different for men and women. Jespersen refused to follow the makeup requirement stating it made her feel degraded and forced to be feminine. She sued on the claim of sex discrimination because the company’s policy required females to act in accord to sex based stereotypes.
