Darkwinter saw Emeraldblossom stop and look towards her best friend, who also happened to be their stepsister, Sandblossom. Sandblossom was pinned by a large DragonClan cat and he was slowly raking his claws down her belly. If we don’t save her, she’ll die! But we have to stop Hawkspots! Darkwinter frantically looked at her sister, who was already tearing across the slick, wet, battlefield towards Sandblossom.
“Emeraldblossom! No! I can’t fight Hawkspots on my own! You’ll never get there in time!” But Emeraldblossom kept running. Darkwinter looked back to Hawkspots. I can’t let my father take over the forest.
Darkwinter raced across Fourtress and leaped onto her father’s back, pulling him off of Blackshade. “What are you doing foolish cat!?” Hawkspots spat at her. “I can’t let you take over the forest!” she lounged at her father, but he quickly dodged her and jumped onto her back. “Didn’t Mapleshade teach you to let your opponent attack first?!”

Darkwinter struggled to throw her father off of her but he held her down and whispered in her ear, “That’s right Darkwinter, I told Mapleshade to train you and Emeraldblossom, I was the one who sent your sister to watch you in BloodClan, and I was the one who told Mapleshade to give you the fake prophecy. Everything would have turned out right if your sister Emeraldblossom hadn’t seen me kill Featherblossom. And now, she is useless to me!” Hawkspots hissed. “What are you going to do?!” Darkwinter hissed as she struggled against her father's hold. Hawkspots laughed evilly, “I’m going to take over the forest!” He then leaped off of her and attacked Blackshade, who had just started to stand

In the story “Marigolds,” Eugenia Collier develops the theme “One cannot have both compassion and innocence” through her use of several literary techniques. One technique she uses is external conflict. An example of this technique is found in the quote, “The children screamed with delight, while she (Miss Lottie) screamed curses at them” (87). This example shows that the children had their innocence while being out of control and had no compassion for Miss Lottie and her feelings. Another technique she employs is internal conflict.…

Why is it that when a new idea is brought to light, society ridicules it without a second taught? The short story “The Glass Roses” written by Aiden Nowlan, suggests that even though your way of life does not resemble the life of others does not mean it is wrong, rather if the new idea brings happiness, people must pursue these evolved ideas. This theme is possible because of the author’s use of indirect characterization, relatable conflict, and grim setting. Throughout life most people face the conflict of pursuing personal desire or the desire to follow a beaten path.…

The story Victory Lap by George Saunders is ambiguous and has many unexpected twists. Through the characters’ thoughts, it is revealed that who they appear to be isn’t always who they turn out to be. The story starts off slightly confusing, as it begins in the mind of Alison Pope. The first few paragraphs suggest that the story is about a young girl pretending to be a princess, until her thoughts change to her dance recital, then to her family, and many other things. It then becomes clear that Alison Pope is a young, teenage girl who has a lot of thoughts running through her head at any moment in the day.…
