Darkness In Macbeth

The Depth of Darkness From the beginning of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the imagery of darkness becomes increasingly prevalent. In the play, the Scottish nobleman Macbeth is deceived by a deathly trio of witches. He is slowly consumed by the evil and darkness they implant. The force that begins to control him is rooted in selfishness, greed, and hatred. His actions of evil cause others, specifically his wife, to commit even more atrocities. Macbeth is overcome with self-righteousness and truly believes that he is invincible. He is insatiable. Throughout the play Shakespeare portrays a man that does all the wrong things for the wrong reasons and causes strife and even war to engulf Scotland. Macbeth is driven by a dark power that has been put upon him by the witches and now he is constantly grappling for more. At the beginning of the play the reader is met with a ghastly introduction of thunder and lightning where three dames of darkness riddle and rhyme about who their next victim will be. This leads to further corruption and pollution that eventually engulfs Scotland. Macbeth’s quick and sudden rise to power after power is one cause of his arrogance, which proves to be his downfall. He is deceived by three witches that promise him authority and supremacy over all others. They use their predictions in crafty ways to lead Macbeth astray and onto their path of destruction. The witches exist for evil and ruin. Macbeth is taken completely over by their influence and cannot do anything else but hunger and grapple for more control.
