Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote can mean so many different things, it’s just dependant on how the person interprets it. When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated those two sentences it was during one of his equality speeches, he believed that this quote would be an inspiring eye opener to the racist and discriminating people. He wanted to show people that hating one another isn’t going to solve anything, it will just add to the fire, the same with darkness and light. Throughout this essay, the readers will see who truly followed this quote, how they interpreted the quote, and what they had to go through that proved just how much this quote means to them. Also, putting this quote into real life, current day situations, and how individuals act and/or how they should act if they followed this quote.

One person who completely lived by this quote in her short life was Anne Frank. In further research, there was information discovered on just how true that statement is and how good she looked at the world compared to the one’s around her. For example when, hiding in the “Secret Annex” Anne discovers ways to remain positive. In an article, Berenbaum states,” Throughout the years she hid in the “Secret Annex” she found every day to be a gift and that, throughout her emotional journey, she remained positive and used the love of people around her to push away the darkness she witnessed (Berenbaum).” Anne used her family as her light to push away the darkness and hatred she was facing within herself.
