This study is to provide an explanation regarding discrimination and struggles experienced by American immigrants; preciously, the ones with darker skin pigments. As seen in the article Profiling the New Immigrant Worker: The Effects of Skin Color and Height, this article, “presents strong evidence that darker skin color is associated with lower wages for new legal immigrants to the United States” (Hersch, 2008). This study compares immigrant with darker skin color to immigrants with lighter skin color. However, the study was conducted by looking at individual’s wages using the multiple regression approach. This approach looks at the effect of pay based off dissimilarities in individual worker characteristics, such as skin color, ethnicity and other related skills. However, when tested, the changing of variables resulted in different results. Researched showed various changes in percentages derived from quantitative research. Key findings related to the overall issue is that skin color does have an impact on one’s salary. However, other characteristics other than skin color were also seen as discrimination indicators. All in all, the study was conclusive with my thesis which revolved around immigrant’s struggles, barriers, and discrimination. As seen from research, not only is race a factor, but characteristics such as education, gender, language, and ethnicity. The approach taken to conclude the wage findings was appropriate.
