The fanboy faithful have a lot to get excited about this year. Not only have we had some killer comic book cinema, but there is still half a year left with some fresh new films about lesser known graphic novels. The cherry on this comic book bonanza sundae is that the medium inspiring these films is bringing its A-game this year. Marvel, their Distinguished Competition, and numerous indie publishers have some powerhouse numbers rolling off the presses, and these red-hot rags are going to be canon mandatory reading material. Here’s what to expect so you can plan out your reading time this summer.

Batman scribe Paul Dini, who has penned some of the greatest Batman fiction ever produced in any media, authors a graphic novel about his relationship with the characters he has helped immortalize throughout his career. Dini was assaulted in 1993 by two muggers who shattered his skull, leaving him with a lengthy recovery while largely immobilized. Dark Night is told from his point of view, set during his recovery as he considered the comic book fan and author’s relationship with the concept of mythic heroism. Dini ponders why we love these heroes who transcend the ordinary., as well as whether or not we should idolize them. This unique novel drops in June 2016, and many are anxious to see what impact a fourth-wall breaking novel of this scope and raw personal truth will make on the face of comics. From what little has been revealed of the plot so far, Sunset Park is a gothic horror tale on the topic of gentrification that, according to the author, takes on monstrous aspect as the unnameable horror that terrorizes the populace. Given Wimberly’s own history and locale, it should be interesting to watch him reimagine something he has watched occur in person.
