Dark Hours is a novel written by Gudrun Pausewang. This booklet describes five significant events throughout Dark Hours. Firstly, Oma leaves Gisela with her brothers at the train station to go to the information desk. Secondly, Gisela meets Lotte and takes her in. Thirdly, Gisela and the children are trapped in the cellar. Fourthly, Lotte finds the pipe which leads to Herr Rockel. Lastly, Gisela, Erwin, Harald, Wolfi, Lotte and Herr Rockel gets out of the cellar.

Erwin calls through the pipe, and he is able to communicate to a soldier, Herr Rockel. Herr Rockel badly injured his leg, but he guides Gisela and helps them to survive throughout the novel. This is significant because they are not trapped alone and they have someone older to rely on besides Gisela. Rockel tells Gisela to ration their food and water carefully and to shout for help every 15 minutes. Because of his advice, rescuers were able to find them and eventually rescue them.
Getting out of the cellar
In the 20th chapter, Gisela, Erwin, Harald, Wolfi and Lotte are rescued. They are able to reunite with their family, except for Lotte and Herr Rockel. In this chapter, Herr Rockel’s death is confirmed. Gisela is relieved that she is no longer responsible for the kids anymore. Gisela and her brothers forms a bond with Lotte and she later becomes part of their family. Gisela eventually finds Herr Rockel’s daughter Sophie. Gisela and Sophie became good friends for the rest of their lives.
