An Italian Scholar in 1300s, Petrarch used the term "Dark Age" to describe the period in Europe after the fall of Rome. Even though some stated it was in a dark age, it was more in a period of growth. Why it is more in a period of growth it is because there were good things happening like new universities built. Europe is more in a period of growth than a dark age.
