Dare is a really fun class to be in, not only because there's no homework, but also the experience. I learned a lot of really cool things in dare, what the DARE decision making model is and how to use it, and what I plan to use the information for. I decided you should probably know a little bit about it.

I learned lots of things in DARE like how to control my feelings, good decisions, and what causes of drugs are. Have you ever got really mad at a sibling and you just want to strangle them? Well this is where I use my problem solving skills to control my feelings. Usually I just go to my room but if I'm really mad I go to the garage and take a few huge slap shots. It really cools my feelings. To make good decisions you have to be smart and know the consequences. For example: People ask you if you want a cigarette and you say yes (not smart), but maybe you don't know the consequences. Every time you smoke a cigarette you lose 11 seconds of your life.

Respond - Make a choice.
Evaluate - Was you choice a good one?

Let's go back to our example. The problem is that people ask you to smoke and you know it's unhealthy. Think what you can do, you could run off, you could say, “No thanks” or even say yes. Your response was to say yes. Think to yourself after, “Was that a good choice?”

I know that eventually someone is going to ask me to smoke like the example. I am going to have to be strong enough to say no. It is really good I am in this class and learned so much about my health and behavior. I plan to use what I learned to make the right decisions and not to smoke.

All in all, dare is a really fun class to be in. Now you know how to make the right decisions and what the DARE decision making model is and how to control your feelings. I hope you can't wait to be in this class next

In the book, Mistakes Were Made (but not by me), Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson are able to showcase true life accounts of people that have made wrong decisions that were either unacceptable or completely terrible, who justified their actions as if they did nothing wrong. People do this because as humans, it is too complicated for us to admit that we have done something wrong, so instead we like to cover ourselves up with justifications. This then causes for the person to make the assumption that they have not made a mistake, but instead that others that surround them do. Each person has someone to help them make choices, whether it be a personal advisor, a partner, a whole community, they are there to assist, but usually, people like to…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
