On August 4th of that same year, a native of Pleasant Grove spotted a collective colored quilt lying in Old Highland Park. Under the impression that the quilt belonged to Baum, the man figured he should return the presumably missing blanket back to its rightful owner. But to his, (and eventually everyone else’s) unmitigated horror, the quilt was hiding …show more content…
Cary Downey had interviewed a colossal extent of Baum’s friends and family, however nobody was able to illustrate her motives. “There was nothing anybody could explain. It would be nice to be able to ask her, I’ll tell you that (Larsen, 1999.).” Although it’s true Baum’s purpose for abandoning three of her four infants cannot be explained with complete accuracy, a number of theories can be interpreted when regarding this tragic tale. It is possible that, given the grotesque stature of her crimes, that Darcie Jo Baum was suffering from personal psychological demons, ones that had grown severe enough to provoke the inauguration and continuance of ferocious …show more content…
Both physically and psychologically the person is damaged, at times beyond repair. And, in Baum’s case, those devastations were deeply imbedded, were indeed permanent, ultimately taking a massive toll on her cognitive well-being. To the contrary, Baum’s mother, Vickie Austin, has claimed there’s been nothing in her daughter’s past life that could have driven her to execute such appalling crimes. “We’ve racked our brains and grasped at straws searching for something in her life that would give clues as to why this happened. We can’t come up with anything.(CITATION).” It’s not uncommon for a parent to be unaware of abuse in existence, especially if it’s sexual. However, when comparing Austin’s proclamation to the pattern of Baum’s crimes, a hint of statement fragmentation comes to play. Looking back on the murder of the three infants, it’s noticed that two out of the three were female. In match with the timeline, the first child Baum bore in 1992 was a baby girl. The second, born in 1995, was a boy--- her surviving son Draye. Three years later she gives birth to another girl, and, like the one before, abandons her. In regards to this pattern, it can be hypothesized that Baum harbored a dormant hatred for women. It’s possible that her abuser shared her same sex, and may possibly even be from her family. Connecting Austin’s statement to the police, it can be presumed that Darcie Jo
