A drug addict is often on the “straight road” (Dante 28) or living a good life until something tragic happens. This can be a loss of a family member, financial issues, or pressured into drugs. Once the person takes the drug, their life can be changed forever and pushed off the “straight road”. If the drug is strong enough, they become addicted because it gives them a high that makes them feel good. When this occurs, they fall into the dark woods like Dante experiences in Canto I. The woods are dark and full of sins. The drug addict must fight against the sin and come clean. They must climb up an abstract hill to reach soberness and happiness. This is like in Canto I how Dante is climbing up a hill to reach the pinnacle joy but experiences hell along the way. This is like how a drug addict must resist the urge to do drugs and stay strong through withdrawals. If they choose to do drugs, they will experience horrible side effects that set them back on their journey to light. Rehab and other therapy practices can accelerate their path to the top. Once they overcome the struggle of drug addiction, they reach the top of the hill and start living a normal life again. The moral of this comparison is that falling off a good path in life takes strength and dedication to return back to the good
