The environment affects the ways people react towards society and each other. In the prison of Chateau d'If, Dantes had occupied a cold, dark chamber with no human contact and received malnourishing food and little water which, if not already, drove him mad. Everyone around him refused to listen to the truth, with the idea infused in their heads that he was guilty and there was nothing more to him than a traitor. This jurassic change in environment tinted Dante’s optimistic views to a more pessimistic mindset of the world he once knew. Dantes’ struggle wasn’t only physically, but mentally detrimental to the discovery of his new identity.…

Gericault uses the space in his painting to depict the raft and sailors close and in the foreground, and he depicts the ship very far off in the background. The change in size of the ship in the background implies a great distance from the raft. The change in the size of the waves also imply depth in the painting. Gericault creates a rhythm in his painting by creating a dark wave on the left side of the painting then adding in the sail, and the sailor lifted up, and then ending on the right side with a smaller dark wave. The rhythm comes together with the unity to bring cohesiveness to the artwork.…

The painting depicts a scene of nude fishermen walking along a shoreline with their captured haul saddled onto their shoulders. The composition of the work pushes the viewer’s vision to the left side as all figures face and walk towards that direction. This push to the left is also emphasized through the spears of the fishermen, which look like arrows directly informing the viewer to follow its trajectory.…
