Dante, a living man, decides to take an adventure through hell to get to heaven. His guide is named Virgil. Virgil was a poet that Dante greatly admired. They voyage through nine circles representing different sins on earth. Each sin matches to one circle in this order:Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath and sullenness, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery. In each circle the souls of the sinners are forced into punishments that fit their sin on earth. In almost each circle, Dante finds people he knew or knew about on earth. Limbo contains all the people born before christ and therefore, are neither punished or sent to heaven. Here lies Homer, Socrates, Plato, Virgil, and many more. In the Wrath circle, sinners fight each other on the surface, while the sullen gurgle beneath it. In the Heresy circle, heretics are trapped in flaming tombs. In the Violence circle is separated into three parts, the violent against people and property, the suicides, the last part contains the blasphemers and sodomites. The fraud circle has ten stony ditches with bridges between them. In Bolgia 1, Dante sees panderers and seducers. In Bolgia 2 he finds flatterers. After crossing the bridge to Bolgia 3, he and Virgil see those who are guilty of simony. After crossing another bridge between the ditches to Bolgia 4, they find sorcerers and false prophets. In Bolgia 5 are housed corrupt politicians, in Bolgia 6 are hypocrites and in the remaining 4 ditches, Dante finds hypocrites (Bolgia 7), thieves (Bolgia 7), evil counselors and advisers (Bolgia 8), divisive individuals (Bolgia 9) and various falsifiers such as alchemists, perjurers and counterfeits (Bolgia 10).
