Dante's Inferno: A Short Story

Dante was going shopping for his very first suit. His mom had gone back to college when Dante was six and now she was graduating. The only thing she had asked for was for Dante to be at the ceremony in a brand new suit. He was so proud of her that he wanted the day to be perfect.

He was sure to tell Mike that they were on a budget as well.

"You're in luck," Mike said. "We're having a big sale. Suits are 60% off this weekend only."

Mike told Dante he would need to measure him before they could get started. He asked him to stand up on a stool and took out a tape measure. He measured the length of Dante's arms and legs and the width of his chest and hips. When he finished, Mike told Dante that he would pick a few options to start with and disappeared into the store room.

When Mike returned, he had three different complete outfits. The first was a black suit with a vest, a white shirt, and a purple, silver, and black patterned tie. Dante took it into the dressing room to try in on. He had no trouble with the pants and shirt, but he needed a bit of assistance with the vest and tie.

Mike led Dante to a large full-length mirror. Dante turned around, hardly believing he was looking at himself. He looked taller, older, and altogether different.

The next two outfits were each slightly different. One was a navy striped suit with a light blue shirt and blue and green striped tie. The other was a dark brown suit with a cream shirt and a brown and orange

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Film has a particular way of drawing those in to the way it should be viewed; the use of colour and how it is controlled is one such way. Tom Ford’s film A Single Man highlights the use of a controlled colour palette to create the atmosphere of the film. It relies on aspects of mise-en-scène such as positioning of objects on screen, colour aspects such as comparison of colours used between certain characters and comparison of colour between scenes and the reasons for such. A Single Man uses these aspects to create a connection between the mental states and personalities of the characters presented within the film.…

In “The Painter of Modern Life,” Charles Baudelaire gives his definition and explanation about the true beauty of art. In the first section “Beauty, Fashion, and Happiness,” Baudelaire shows his concern about the “present” in the painting because he thought that the beauty of the art is “its essential quality of being present” (p.1). In the following passage, Baudelaire uses a lot of words to praise a man named as “Monsieur G” in the essay. He describes Monsieur G, just like the title of this section, as “the artist, man of the world, man of the crowd, and child” (p.5). Baudelaire thought that Monsieur G’s curiosity and observation of the world and life made him such a skilled, unconventional artist.…
