The Influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ruan Huisman and Banksy on My Artwork and Concept

My concept and artwork has been inspired by hyper-realism and symbolism movements. That is why I have chosen these two artists for this essay. The first artist is Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the artwork is La Pia de' Tolomei (1868-80). The other artist and his work is Untitled I by Ruan Huisman. The final artist, Banksy, is a huge influence on me in both an emotional and physical way through his artworks. I have chosen to speak about his Steve Jobs Mural because of how though-out and brilliant executed this artwork was.

A couple of years ago my cousin introduced me to his artwork and style and I have been infatuated by his mysterious story ever since. His artwork Steve Jobs Mural, like all the rest, has a controversial topic that he is trying to address or mock, which makes people think when they see it. I really admire how he has the ability to spray paint on a wall, during the dead of the night and in the morning have people view his creation and try and understand it. Then, have the possibility of someone painting over it – all to make a statement about a current problem in the world. This influenced me in my concept for this practical because it made me think about a problem/issue that I want to speak about and discuss – not necessarily a global issue but an important issue to me none the less. The idea of drawing something and then having to look deeper than the surface to fully understand it, is an aspect that I tried to incorporate into my work. My use of colour amongst the other black, white and greys is inspired by Banksy’s use of colour. This because he mainly uses two tones black or white so when he uses colour it is only used for a specific purpose. An example being Steve Jobs’ blue pants is the only colour in his artwork. It is used to draw attention to the artwork and thus serves its

The artist that influenced me to create the project I am presenting today is Romare Bearden. Due to the fact, he didn’t learned new techniques and mediums as an artist, but by his life personal experiences. Many of his work had a eye connection in the middle of one’s point of view, many types of geometric shapes, and had an linear and semi-abstract style (Patchwork Quilt). He also had struggled with two artistic sides of himself: his background as “a student of literature and of artistic traditions, and being a black human being involves very real experiences, figurative and concrete”. In the 1960s, civil rights movement he started experimenting again with collage forms such as clippings from magazines, old newspapers, glossy scraps to improve his work.…

Giorgio Vasari wrote the book, The Lives of the Artists is an expressive, yet biased manner. Throughout his biographies of the artists, Vasari is critical of each artist’s work; especially when it does not reflect what he looks for in a work. Even though, Vasari is a prejudiced writer, one learns several things about each artists’ style, thought process, and background which influence later artists to produce masterpieces. Within the biographies of Cimabue and Duccio, Vasari makes it obvious that Florence painters, deserve more praise than Sienese painters.…

For instance, Claesz, in trying to push his moral rather than the pure sentiment of art for art’s sake, sticks to local color and a realistic depiction of all the elements in his Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill. Like using simple words to tell various aesops, this plain decision does not distract from the story of futility Claesz tells in his painting, and can appeal to the widest range of people purely by faithfully presenting real objects they can identify. He is not, however, completely ignorant to the power which color can wield, as the highlighted area of the skull has a powerful contrast with the dark background, again serving to make Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill yet more high-impact, so it can more efficiently deliver its message. On the other hand, it is extremely difficult to discern whether Pablo Picasso used local color in Still Life with a Bottle of Rum, as his integration of the subject with the background is so absolute as to be unable to tell which plane is which part of the image. His overall color scheme is extremely muted, working only in browns and tones of black, white, and gray.…

The Mayor has invited the public to join the debate before they write the statement. I will be sharing my thoughts on the situation about this act of stylistic destruction. Graffiti, the act that constantly tips on the edges of either art or vandalism, and this same situation has been going for decades now. I'm here to stand my ground on how graffiti may be illegal in some places and outlawed in others, but it is still a strong form of art, which has shaped many key elements of the modern large cities.…
