The Silence that Enriches

Is it better for someone to stay silent and listen to the world, or let the world stay silent to listen to the person’s thoughts? Danny Saunders grows up in silence as the son of a Jewish Rabbi. The Chosen by Chaim Potok displays the growing friendship of two boys, who have singular views of their Jewish faith. An Orthodox Jew, Danny learns his beliefs from his father; Whereas Reuven, a Hasidic Jew carries different beliefs than that of his friend Danny. This can sometimes make it difficult for the friendship to grow. Although the two boys have different views, Danny illustrates his integrity to the reader as the two friends hit bumps along the road of their friendship, making him an exemplary character. Since Danny does not know much about the subconscious, he develops a curiosity for it wanting to find out more; Because of his curiosity, he teaches himself German so he can read about it from its original context. In a world with countless viewpoints, defining wisdom can pose a challenge. While some wisdom shows truth universally, some wisdom can present itself as a problem of subjectivity. In the book The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the author uses this theme of wisdom to influence the protagonists of the story from the wisdom of two fathers. These fathers, however, differ in many key areas such as wisdom for life generally, wisdom in raising children, and wisdom for the world fraught with persecution of the Jews. Thus, the two children themselves must show wisdom in deciding which viewpoint shows validity.…

Elizabeth Price Foley, an American legal theorist once wisely stated, “The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.” This quote intelligently states with hidden meaning that two people do not have to think exactly the same way, or live near each other to remain friends. In The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the many different friendships that develop also reflect the meanings behind this quote. The characters in the book do not always agree with each other, yet they keep open minds about ideas differing from their own and consequently grow much because of these relationships. The necessity of friendship throughout life can be seen in the interactions between the characters Reuven, Danny, and Rev Malters.…

Danny frequently 'had to be in control' (p.167) in his relationships with his teachers or Tom, which made it 'easy for people to slip into thinking he wasn’t violent' (p.171). Barker shows the readers that in many of his relationships Danny 'was very, very good at getting people to step across that invisible border'(p.168), like 'lambs to the slaughter' (p.168). That makes the border between getting professionally or personally involved with Danny very blurred. Many characters in the book, such as Martha, Tom, Angus and Mrs Greene, have noticed that line being crossed accidentally. By creating Danny's image to be manipulative and psychopathic, Barker makes the readers question if Danny has always been like this, or if these are survival qualities, passed onto him by his father and the jailing system.…

In The Chosen, the theme is that cultural expectations often influence one's decisions in life through friendships, professions, and feelings. Parenting impacts the way a child thinks and feels towards life. By Reuven's dad reminding him of what the Talmud says, it reminds him that he should give Danny a chance and hear him out. David explained to Reuven how to react in a situation like his and how it is not healthy to hold grudges (Potok 94-95). Reuven's dad…
