In the short story, “The Somebody”by Danny Santiago, self-proclaimed ‘Chato de Shamrock’ makes the decision to quit school and become a ‘writer.’ While disinheriting his father’s name, Chato decides to make it big on the streets of East L.A and goes around the city spreading his fame by writing his name on various buildings and street objects. Since Santiago writes in first person, the story is narrated through Chato’s perception of the world and his account may not be entirely accurate. However, through the use of other characters, the author is able to relay information outside of Chato’s narration. The minor characters that interact with Chato in the story serve to subtly explain his actions and explain his background outside of his narration.
