King uses horrific imagery when Danny imagines images of death to symbolize his decision to stop Jack. King describes, “...death images came to [Danny]: dead frog plastered to the turnpike like a grisly stamp; Daddy's broken watch lying on top of a box of junk to be thrown out; gravestones with a dead person under every one; dead jay by the telephone pole; the cold junk Mommy scraped off the plates and down the dark maw of the garbage disposal. Danny has grasped that the Overlook’s monster hides behind other people. He now realizes that the Overlook is the culprit behind his father’s behavior, not his father himself. He learns what is real and what is not, a lesson signified by the images of the masked force. Furthermore, penetrating imagery is used to embody Danny’s increase in maturity, when he realizes Tony is a part of him. Danny realizes, “...looking at Tony was like looking into a magic mirror and seeing himself in ten years...as...the Daniel Anthony Torrance that would someday be” (620). Tony is a part of Danny, almost like a “mirror” image from the future, therefore he is a mature version of Danny. Tony is a symbol of Danny’s maturity and perceptiveness; before, Danny considered Tony to be a simple figment of imagination that was separate from himself, and nothing more. Danny’s observing of Tony represents how Danny now realizes that Tony is him. He is a guide, therefore Danny changes his behavior, follows Tony’s instructions and prepares to go against Jack and protect his family.
