Daniel Orozco's Orientation Analysis

Throughout life, we often hear reoccurring phrases that we feel like we hear time and time again, just as Daniel Orozco emphasizes in Orientation. The overly detailed dialogue displays his frustration with how routine orientations are. On the other hand, it is also a very comical piece. Throughout the short story, Orozco is telling the new employee frankly what he can and cannot do, with some of which being quite ridiculous. Towards the end, he explains to the new employee that he will be working with a serial killer and tells him “if in any case, when he gets caught, act surprised” (Page 54). After hearing this, I would be extremely nervous to say the least. I also do not think I could stay that calm and nonchalant if I was about to be associating myself with a serial killer every day. In my opinion, Orozco meant for this to be somewhat comical by taking Kevin Howard, the serial killer, a bit lightly. …show more content…
Hearing all that he can and cannot do on the first day can promote the fear of messing up to a whole new level. If I was this employee, I would be very nervous for several reasons. The first being that if I made the slightest mistake on some very silly things, I could be “let go”. Throughout the passage, the new employee was told that he would be let go if he did things such as: make an emergency phone call without asking, letting certain things interfere with his work, or “cooking” instead of “heating” food in the microwave (Page’s 50-54). I think by including these things in the story, Orozco is trying to represent some of the silly things that could get people into trouble within their workplace. I also think Orozco meant to incorporate some type of connection between the new employee and the reader. By the time I finished this passage, I could not help but feel some sort of sympathy for the new

Classical conditioning Pierce to stimuli together repeatedly eliciting a specific response until the association between both stimuli is imprinted so much that only one of the stimulus is required to elicit the same response. People condition themselves in regards to certain tasks or routines to help deal with their emotion. Routine activities provide a sense of control over one's emotions and helps organize and dispel negative emotions. In this the author does a great job in showing it. What is missing is the corporation’s side of things. It talks about what their motives may be and who could be causing their actions, but there isn’t anything from them to actually explain their actions. This helps show the worker as being taken advantage of but also leads to a piece that seems a little out of…

Psychopathy is a personality disorder manifested in people who use a mixture of charm, manipulation, intimidation, and occasionally violence to control others, in order to satisfy their own selfish needs (“Serial Murder”). This is exactly what killer Edmund Kemper used against his victims before committing numerous, heinous acts upon them and their corpora. Not only has Kemper been infamously used as an inspiration for many films and television shows, he also serves as a constant reminder to young women across the country to stay away from strangers. Like many literary characters we’ve read about such as Macbeth, The Co-Ed Killer has brought our nightmares to life starting when he was just a young child.…

The Rule of Conservative Change states there is the division of two modes of cognition; coping and co-creation. Coping mode is the defense and last-resort mode, and is essentially impulse governed and disregards morals.…

The Hillside Stranglers fall under several themes of violence from class, like containment, instrumentality of violence, social influence, and psychopath, which they will now be analyzed under. I think it also important to note their upbringing and how familial influence could have played a role, through genes or environment. Firstly, in terms of containment it is not enough to say that all these atrocities took place in the Los Angeles area, but the bodies were all disposed in locations relatively close to each other. For the most part, the Hillside Stranglers used hillsides along middle class areas situated closely to police stations (The Hillside Stranglers, 2018), but in an evaluation of more recent victimes it was discovered that one…

The author describes how killers develop, how they act, and ways they kill. The reason the article was eye catching was because of its great use of logos, ethos, and pathos.
