Mendoza the Jew and Religious Tolerance
Religious prosecution against Jews was prevalent all throughout European history. The story of Daniel Mendoza in Schechter and Clarke’s graphic history novel Mendoza the Jew perfectly embodies religious prosecution in eighteenth century England. Daniel Mendoza, an 18th century Jewish boxer, fought a battle in and out of the ring against religious prosecution in late 1700’s England. Being born into a deeply religious Jewish family Daniel learned the importance of his faith from a young age, and stood up for it his entire life. Although Jews like Daniel had the opportunity to improve their social and economic positions many Englishmen were not tolerant of people of the Jewish belief. The Spanish Inquisition

Daniel opened up a new boxing “academy” in the “more fashionable” west end of London. Many Englishmen realized the value of learning the art of boxing but were extremely hesitant to learn from the sport from a Jew. One Englishmen said to another “I feel a little uneasy taking a boxing lesson from a Jew.” The people of London, especially upper class, felt uneasy about a Jewish man being in any position of power. This is exemplified again by Daniel’s once friend Mr. Reynolds. Reynolds gave Mendoza his winnings, as a gift, after a fight once and then reported to the authorities that Daniel failed to repay him the twenty gunnies that he “lent” him. Once Mendoza accumulated power and prominence in London many Catholic men felt threatened by his stature, one of these men was Mr. Reynolds. Reynolds felt that he was better off financially backing catholic boxers, not a Jew. Reynolds entire attempt to tarnish Mendoza’s reputation is an implicit demonstration of a lack of religious tolerance in 18th century London that takes place throughout Mendoza the

In the satirical novel, “ Dealing with Dragons” by Patricia C. Wrede, the disobedient and self-reliant Cimorene refuses the typical expectations of her family and the rest of civilization. Due to the pressure and constant reminder of how “it’s simply not done” Cimorene flees her dilemma and finds shelter with the dangerous and ferocious dragon, Kazul. Cimorene was justified in ignoring the expected social norms of Medieval society because Cimorene could overlook her life, create an impact on other princesses, her judgement would be altered, and she would gain a better respect for uncanny creatures. To begin, Cimorene could further explore the subjects that were not studied by traditional princesses and would receive an advantage when using…

Throughout Europe during the sixteenth-century tensions over religion were rising to the boiling point. The Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre is easily the premiere example of how the two sides of the religious reformation collided. The recanting of the thoroughly chronicled massacre and the events prior and after it, are retold in highly different manners from the opposing sides. The collection of primary sources by Barbara B. Diefendorf not only gives a detailed record of events surrounding the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, but as well as allowed readers to understand what forces drove people to use violence in support of their religions. The sources, furthermore, provide insight that not all people of the society during the sixteenth…

From the Christian Martyrs in Ancient Rome to the suppression of Catharism in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Counter-Reformation and the 30 Years War that followed it, religious condemnation and persecution has been commonplace throughout European History, including the medieval era. Often, this persecution in fact benefitted the persecutors personally, rather than being a selfless act to ensure the faith remained ‘pure’. This was no less true during the 12th century Renaissance – the time of Abelard, Heloise, and Peter the Venerable – than it was for the rest of pre-modern Europe. Abelard was an important philosopher, and why he may have lacked political ambition, he was nevertheless a powerful man (at least, at times). He was persecuted…

This is because Kane had no real father-figure to help him with his problems, so Cliff filled that hole in Kane’s life. After Cliff touched Kane’s face, Kane said, “ Is this what it feels like to have a father touch you?” The author's intention for this quote was to demonstrate that Kane had not had the feeling of his father being around and had never bonded with anyone like that before and Cliff was the first to give the positive influence of giving him that feeling.…

The medieval inquisition had played a considerable role in Christian Spain during the 13th century, but the struggle against the Moors had kept the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula busy and served to strengthen their faith. When toward the end of the 15th century the Reconquista was all but complete, the desire for religious unity became more and more pronounced. Spain’s Jewish population, which was among the largest in Europe, soon became a target. Over centuries, the Jewish community in Spain had flourished and grown in numbers and influence, though anti-Semitism had surfaced from time to time. During the reign of Henry III of Castile and Leon (1390–1406), Jews faced increased persecution and were pressured to convert to Christianity.…
