Weaning signals the end of one phase and the beginning of another stage. It is also known as “complementary feeding”. Actually the minute baby eats something other than breast milk, weaning has begun. Weaning is the term that connotes a certain maturity on the baby’s part, which allows the baby to switch from breast milk to other foods and beverages.
The main concern in weaning is when and how to wean. Weaning is done to preserve child’s enjoyment of food and drink to encourage him to make the change. If weaning is started after 1 year the child may become very used to the bottle. He may feel resentful and frustrated.

Dangers of weaning period:
Weaning can be one of the most dangerous periods of baby’s life as it involves many risk factors with it.
These are the factors that can make this period difficult to suffer:
• Nutritional disturbance
• Infections i.e. whooping cough, and measles due to weak immune system
• Weanling diarrhea due to presence of pathogens in food
Nutrients that should be focused during weaning:
Fiber
The baby should have foods with less fiber like a mixture of white and wholegrain cereals and breads. Fiber rich foods should be avoided as they are heavy for the stomach of the baby. Many wholegrain foods and pulses are not beneficial for your baby. For children of this age no dietary recommendations for intake of fiber are made.
Fat
Fat is an important and main source of energy for the baby. Fat rich foods like milk, cheese, paneer and yoghurt are important. Fats help to absorb vitamins like (Vitamin A,D, E and K)
