Freshman Fifteen: Eating Habits Among High School Students

The Freshman Fifteen is a generalization which suggests that once high school students go off to college, they gain fifteen pounds by the end of the year due to a variety of factors. And, unfortunately, there is always a grain of truth in generalizations. A few variables that add to this generalization are: “new eating habits, not enough exercise, drinking, and a slowing metabolism” (Health). There is no permanent cure for this dilemma, but there are steps that college administrators can take to help students from falling into these bad habits. By examining the dangers students face today, instituting a health dynamics class with a three pronged attacked where the professors discuss how the body will react to these bad habits, the importance of health, and how to stay healthy would help conquer the Freshman Fifteen.

The base of this course will stem from how the body reacts to the bad habits tempted by college life. Once a student leaves home and is on a college campus, freedom is invariably part of the new equation: students feel as though they are finally on their own, away from their parents and it is very easy to fall into the traps of eating late night high caloric foods and drinking alcohol because these actions are the “popular things” to do on a college campus. Along with this feeling of freedom, students have a feeling of invincibility. Actions never equal consequences, and the new mindset is what hurts them in the long run. This class helps these problems by teaching the students the consequences of their potential actions that are so easy and fun to pursue.
