The Civil War took place from 1861-1865 and it was fought between the Union and the Southern Confederate States. The Confederate Army fought for their right to own slaves while the Union fought to abolish all slavery. In the book Confederate Reckoning by Stephanie McCurry, she explains things that take place during the war but are not apart of the battle. McCurry thoroughly explains African slaves and white women during the civil war and their political state of mind and political consequences of their actions and behavior. The Confederate government had to deal with both slaves and white women because of their own choice to fight against the Union in the Civil War.…
After the civil war was over, the North and the South started to execute a plan called the reconstruction. The goal of this was to reconcile the North and South, and to give freedmen (ex-slaves) rights and education. Everything was going really well, and the 13th and 15th amendments to the constitution were ratified, abolishing slavery and giving black men the right to vote. However, the reconstruction started to fall apart in the early 1870’s, and died in 1877.…
With the new rights for freedmen and Reconstruction, many became angry. Although it did not seem a matter for which to be angry, some had different views. The anger met a point to which six former Confederate soldiers decided to from a secret society. It would soon be known as the the Ku Klux Klan. In the klan, members would pretend to be the ghost of dead confederates to deal with revenge on enemies.…
During the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War, Radical Republicans dominated the American political sphere. Radical Republicans occupied the majority of seats in Congress, the presidency, and even state legislatures throughout the former Confederate states excluding Tennessee. With almost unchecked power in their grasps, the Radical Republicans strove to completely reconstruct the South by eliminating the differences between the South and the North. However, the Radical Republican attempts at reconstruction did not succeed. Life did not improve for the freedmen in the South, North-South tensions increased, and the Reconstruction proved to be very ephemeral.…
In 1860, Lincoln’s election convinced whites in the Lower South that Slavery and the society that they had built on it was at risk in the Union, and they seceded. Also the bloody violence that erupted in…
Paige Montanaro Mr. Loggie US History II CP- Research Paper 2 March 2016 The Resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan Pulaski, Tennessee, in May of 1866, one of the most ghastly gangs were composed. This gang was called the KKK. The name KKK stands for Ku Klux Klan which comes from the Greek word “kuklos”, which means, “ring” or “circle”; and the word Klan, which means, “family” (historystudycenter).…
What I think is meant by “Cotton Culture” is an exclusive, hospitable group of farmers that prestigiously operated a large acreage of land, to make profit for themselves and their tenants. Before the Civil War, the South became very self sufficient in sharecropping; gaining for profit and obtaining free labor. Plantation owners would travel from one state to another visiting friends and showing hospitality with their profits by way of southern cooking, music and like formal parties. I can imagine these elites would go back and forward about how much more fruitful the next farmers land was going to be in July or bragging on his strongest working slave. Cotton Culture aristocrats lived a very high profile life stye.…
During the 1880s the KKK was an only male organization, since they saw women as a threat to their male hegemony. However, for Klansman the participation of women was overly important. They used the women to draw on their familial and social links to create an image of an organization, that is interested in the public and economic welfare of the white society. With this system the Klansman were sure to gain the trust of the white American society and extend the growth of their movement. Like Hodes, Blee organized her Article in a chronological pattern.…
The failure of Reconstruction was caused by the sudden shift to give equal political representation for Africans Americans when the society prior was solely based upon White's domination. As a result, it created a feeling of threat to the position of superiority and eventually lead to an engagement of extreme violence from the whites. Heather Richardson’s simulation of a scenario revolving around tax money in Lydon’s The Rebirth of a Nation conceived an idea “that… poor workers run a mock trying to take over the government and get the government to do things for them using white tax dollars or wealthy tax dollars,” directed a downward trend instead of an “upward direction that it was actually [wanted].” Whilst this had triggered the whites,…
Many “revolutionary” movements have come and gone in America’s history, and one of them was the period of Reconstruction following the Civil War. The Reconstruction began in 1865 and marked its end in 1877. Known to bring the Union back together, the Reconstruction also had an outlook on ending the long-going war between the North and South. Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation not only tried to give the blacks their rights, but it also meant a “new light” for slaves trying to end the war’s effects. The Reconstruction wanted to create a Union, and it was indeed a success in doing so, at the most part.…
Racial conflict was happening in the south at a rapid rate as well. The issues of slavery and civil rights was continuing and creating turmoil and violence as well. In the south slavery was a more predominant issue and there were not enough jobs for everyone to make a living. There were many whites that were unable to get jobs because a lot of the big plantations and farms were using slaves to handle all the work necessary. As with the other examples the lack of being able to provide a living would create tension and more racial…
The Ultimate Battle 1860 -1877 were years that encompassed major events beginning as early as the Civil War leading up until the end of Reconstruction. After numerous efforts to improve the country and the status of African Americans after the Civil War, extreme developments were made. Although there were many factors that assisted the reform movement, the key developments were mainly constitutional and social. Events occurring throughout the North and South contributing to the revolution include: The southern secession, the Emancipation Proclamation, the ratification of amendments 13 through 15, the Ku Klux Klan, the Freedman’s Bureau and Black Codes.…
First, Abraham Lincoln’s election as president was a huge blow to the southern community, as it made them nervous he would eventually abolish slavery. They considered this a threat to their luxury of enjoying the profit of slavery. Although Lincoln was clear about his opposition of slavery he also admitted he had not intention of messing with the South’s slave system. For example, Lincoln said, “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists (Hine, 2014).” Be that as it may, the South was not convinced.…
The lives’ of African Americans were altered considerably after the Civil War ended in 1865. Before the Civil War began in 1861, slavery and the limitations placed on both free and enslaved black people was part of life, but when slavery was abolished in 1865 by the passing of the 13th amendment; a new era was arriving. The Era of Reconstruction after the Civil War presented impacted the lives of African Americans positively in many ways, but it must be recognized that there were negative consequences as well. In this essay, both the positive and negative impacts of the changes brought about after the Civil War will be examined. When the Civil War concluded, and Slavery abolished in 1865, the African American people, who lived in the South, were ushered into an era where they had the opportunity to choose their destiny.…
The expanse of war in the South was much larger than in the North. Leaving many plantation destroyed and the cotton market that would not recover. The Civil War was viewed by the South as the “Lost Cause” (textbook, 452) justifying the defeat by moving on hoping for a better future. In turn, the white southern seen the African Americans as “adversaries” (textbook, 453) seeing them as challenging the superiority of white southerner. With so much destruction of property and the defeat to the psych of the southern people.…
