Dangerous Hill
“Take the right side to go up the hill and be careful!”
During winter break last year, I went on a family and friend dirt bike camping trip to Forest Hill, California. We went up to Forest Hill on Christmas day. I was very happy because of the morning before we left, I opened my Christmas presents and I still had the memories of cookies and milk and family time in my mind. I have been riding motorcycles since I was little and my dad was confident in my performance, so he let my older brother and I go on trails together. My mom in her comfy thermal shirt and a warm blanket wrapped around her body always made sure to lecture us before we headed off, “Be safe and careful, take care of your sister!” Usually, I would join my dad, brother, and other friends and family.

Hill Godspeed works at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida as a historian. He has written many articles that have been published in scholarly journals such as Naval History, Naval Aviation News, and the Journal of Military History (Balano 217). Clearly, Godspeed is an expert on the topic of naval aviation. I personally chose Hill Godspeed’s article “Doyle’s Dauntless Dory: USS Nassau and the Evolution of Carrier-based Close Air Support” because the topic of close air support caught my attention. I had heard and read stories about aircraft carriers, but never about amphibious assault ships…

We would pass a bunch of farm animals and open fields filled with big round rolls of hay either sitting across or in a straight line from each other. The scenery mainly consisted of clear fields, bright green trees, clear blue skies, bird calls and roaring cars. Sometimes, it would be a rainy day, on our drive up to the big old creaky house out in the middle of nowhere. It took about…

About the time we were feeling our saddle sores from dealing with a particularly rough and narrow segment of the trail, our troop became stretched out more than usual. I recognized it, and debated whether to call for a rest stop or let things go because of my plan to confront the wayward Raiders. By peeking at my PDA, I could see we’d made reasonable progress. For now, I felt happy. I made my decision and clipped my tablet back on my belt, while the trail switched back on itself, opening up a much wider and pleasant stretch of trail.…

As morning came the sunlight abatjoured through the dark dim lit canyons, of Gunnison National Park, Colorado . I slowly crept out of my sleeping bag, every muscle sore from yesterday's hike. I thought to myself how lucky I am to be backpacking through the National Parks, with four other girls. As I made some camomile tea over the warm fire, a bald eagle soared above the 8,775 ft tall canyons.…

The further I walked the louder it got until I broke through the trees. There it was! A beautiful river, laughing joyously as the water danced over the rocks. The short story “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemmingway is about a couple that is sitting at a train station between Madrid and Barcalona struggling with a critical decision they are faced with. Hemmingway uses dialogue to tell the story and forces the reader to interpret what will happen next. Backpacking the Emigrant Wilderness, which runs along the spine of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, is one of my favorite experiences. The ten of us began our adventure in the evening, hiking from the trailhead to Camp Lake. On the way, storm clouds dropped a little rain but then gave way to scattered light over the surrounding peaks. After sunset, we climbed a high ridge above our campsite. The view West silhouetted trees under wisps of clouds.…
