Danganronpa Background Character

The most common character within a video game is the background character. Although background characters might not be overly important when creating narrative focuses or moving the game’s plot along, good background characters help to populate the video game’s narrative world. Having good background characters can mean the difference between having a believable narrative or one that falls flat. The game’s avatar cannot support the whole game world on their own and background characters take much of the narrative weight by performing needed roles sometimes as small as filling space. The background characters within visual novels are extremely important for many of the same reasons. Some of the game’s characters perform the most basic tasks of holding places and filling up the world, but many of the game’s background characters contribute to the overall theme of the game as well. Due to the fact that Danganronpa’s overall theme deals with the setting up and breaking down of various stereotypes on different black and white spectrums, some of the game’s most important background characters help to do this in the narrative along with the more important characters. It is important to note that this paper chooses only to look at three possible background characters across Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa: Goodbye Despair. There are many characters that work to support the themes of Danganronpa through the breaking out of their stereotypes. By looking at several examples of background characters in the Danganronpa series, it is easy to see how the game creates and breaks down the black and white spectrums of gender that it creates throughout the games on the most basic
