Mr. Hale was brought into Salem to determine is witchcraft was playing a role in two young girls illnesses. “ I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, bearing gifts, of high religion.” (Miller 4.132) Once Hale arrived in Salem he was eager to find the devil in Salem and cure this poor young women like God intended. “I have seen too many frightful proofs in court - the devil is alive in Salem, and we dove not quall to follow whenever the accusing finger points.” (Miller 2.71) Hale is arrogant due to his immense knowledge of faith, thus he is blind to the Abigail and the girls mischief. Hale believes that the only possibility for the conflict in Salem to be witchcraft because no one dare go against the church and the lifestyle upheld in Salem. It isn’t until the very end of the play where Hale can finally look pass religion and see that the young girls needed attention has escalated into a vast witch hunt. Danforth is a Judge appointed to the highest court in the land ruled by God testament. “Postponement now speaks a floundering on my part: reprieve or pardon must coat doubt upon the guilt of them that died till now… I should hang ten thousand that dare to rise against the law.
