Bang! You’re in the middle of a war with and for people you really know nothing about. What do you do? How do you communicate with them? Who helps you? In the movies Dances with Wolves and Glory the lead characters address these situations while dealing with other minor conflicts along the way. In this paper, I will be comparing and contrasting what happens in these movies by talking about the main character, the supporting characters, the plot, and the visual aspects of the movies.
The main character in Dances with Wolves is a lieutenant by the name of John Dunbar. After getting wounded in battle, they tell him he needs to get his leg cut off; he doesn’t quite like this idea so he heads back out to the field, gets on his horse and rides out in front of the two fighting groups. He was trying to kill himself so he would not have to live the rest of his life without a leg however, for this he was recognized for his bravery, got actual medical help for his leg and gets ranked up. Now addressing the details: Dances with Wolves was directed by Kevin Costner whereas Glory was directed by Edward Zwick. However, they were both made around the same time Dances with Wolves was released in November of 1990 and Glory was released February of 1990 so not only are they released the same year, but they are both based in the same period. Dances with Wolves had a 22 million dollar budget, which is probably what made the visual aspects of the movie so beautiful. Glory had an 18 million dollar budget, which is probably the reason for some of the lower quality video and visual scenes.
