According to the ADTA website, dance/movement Therapy (DMT) helps people that have various conditions and is the psychotherapeutic use of movement. “Dance/movement therapy focuses on the movement behavior as it emerges in the therapeutic relationship.” (https://adta.org/faqs/). Many behaviors are considered for individual or group treatment. These behaviors include: expressive, commutative, and adaptive behaviors. According to the American Psychiatric Association, “it is practiced in many different places including: mental health, rehabilitation, medical, educational and forensic settings and in nursing homes, day care centers, disease prevention, health promotion programs and in private practice.” (www.psychiatry.org). According to the American Dance Therapy Association website, it is a holistic approach to healing, based on the empirically supported assertion that mind, body, and spirit are inseparable and interconnected.. DMT is used to reduce stress and manage your moods. Dance therapy is also used for disease prevention. Communication skills and dynamic relationships will boost with dance therapy. People with eating disorders use dance therapy as a release system, to forget about what is going on. Your body image and self-esteem will also be boosted with dance therapy, for example, if you’re self-conscious, you can turn to dance therapy and it will help you feel better about yourself. Dance therapy will make you love your body. You will feel more and more confident as you continue with dance therapy. If you have moods, dance therapy would be an amazing hobby for you, you could use it to release your anger or sadness. In the article, The Healing Powers of Dance, Valerie Perdue, 55, was diagnosed at the age of 42 with Sjögren’s syndrome, where she was constantly tired and couldn’t move. Perdue’s doctor told her she wasn’t going to get well, and then her friend told her about dance therapy. In the article, it said “although she only had the strength to watch to watch, she “was emotionally moved by its beauty.” In the end, Valerie was able to start dancing herself and said she became “physically stronger, mentally clearer.” Dance therapy has also boosted cardiovascular health and bone strength as well. Patient’s feel better as they use dance therapy. But the most improvement is with older patients. The New England Journal of Medicine had a study investigated to see the effect of leisure activities had on the risk of dementia in the elderly. In the article, it said that “frequent dancing was the only physical activity out of the 9 studied that appeared to lower the participants’ risk of dementia considerably.” Intellectual and social stimulation has been shown to reduce the risk of getting
