Connell is giving his pre-performance speech as I look around the Pursuit of Excellence stadium in Marshall, Minnesota. All I can focus on is the huge crowd that seems like it expands every time I look back at it. We line up to walk onto the field—it’s our turn to preform our show for the judges. I walk onto the field anxiously feeling the first break of nervous sweat drip down my face. I scan the field- there are judges everywhere, I become very aware of what’s happening. The announcer comes over the speaker and says, “Welcome the Pride of the Dutchmen marching band from Orange City, Iowa- are you ready to preform your 2014 show named The Flying Dutchmen?” Our conductor raises her hands and the next thing I know I’m marching the show alongside my fellow band members. I am panting heavily trying to regain my breath. Sweat has taken over my face. All I can hear is the loud, screaming roars of proudness from the crowd. I look into the crowd finding the people from Orange City, and I see the excitement on Mr. Connells face about how well we did. The band runs off the field as fast as we can. We walk to the side all the other bands are sitting on and wait for the results. While waiting Connell walks around telling us we did amazing and he is so proud of us. Fast forward a bit to prelims night of grand nationals where we had to compete against 90 bands from across the nation who wanted a shot at a national title and an invitation to march in the 2014 Tournament of Roses parade in California. We had a late performance time on Friday and wouldn’t know the results until Saturday morning. Once we found out we made it to semi-finals we practiced more, then that afternoon we had our performance. If we were in the top twelve of the afternoon, we would earn a spot in the finals performances that night. The clarinet section found out the results from semi-finals on the bus going to finals and we had won.…

When I was a freshman, I joined marching band. Marching band taught me some very helpful characteristics that I started applying to my life. It taught me responsibility, people were relying on me more than I’d ever experienced. It taught me commitment, I had a job to do and I had to be committed to doing that job to the best of my ability or I’d be letting down myself and those around me. Most importantly, I learned confidence; I had always been shy and introverted until I was able to break out of my shell through marching…

The large speakers that surround the filled room begin to vibrate as the loud unknown voice begins to announce my name. I now know that it is my time to shine. While standing behind the long, red curtains I begin to do what comes natural; lifting my head as if I am looking above and beyond the ceiling that lies above me with a smile projecting from my face, standing tall with strong energy from my toes to the tips of my fingers and pushing my shoulders back to respectfully greet my judges. The adrenaline pounds in my chest, but confidence over powers and I am nothing but ready to entertain my audience. I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…
