6 Degrees of Separation: Jack Cole & Casey Nicholaw Six degrees of separation is a theory based on the idea that all people or things in this world can be “connected” through six steps or less. While it may be broad, and not always clear connections, it is very possible to connect any two people in less than six degrees. For this assignment, I will be connecting two famous dance choreographers: Jack Cole, and Casey Nicholaw. Though the two don’t seem to have much in common other than their choreographing professions, we will find that they have more similarities than we originally may have thought.…

    A New York Dancer Summary

Back then there used to be a possibility of catching a rising star, getting in on the ground floor with an unknown choreographer and staying with their reputation and ability to offer employment growth. The success on modern dance is so low now that it is almost impossible for “emerging” choreographers to make the next step toward paid work for their dancers. In our dance meeting, last Tuesday, Professor Hapke and Dr. Sims proceeded to tell us that the arts funding was getting cut and that the opportunities we had, will no longer be available. This means huge things where choreographers right out of school, with no shortage of talent, brains, or hard work need almost impossible quantities of luck and personal connections to break through to the next level. The Joyce Theater’s “Altogether Different” series, spotlights “fresh” talent as well as now featuring the same choreographers more than once over the span of the few…

The short interview with Lauren Anderson is so inspiring that gives me an insight into passion and success as well as motivates me to persist in following my dream. Anderson’s story of her career as a principal ballerina seems quite simple and typical as she started early at seven, soon became a principal dancer of Houston Ballet, and then now is giving back to the society by teaching ballet to children of “underserved” community. However, I believe behind that story are all strenuous efforts and untiring perseverance along with her outstanding talent that kept her lifelong dream alive and made it come true. I can feel in her a great passion for the ballet career in every word she said and every story she told. Because ballet is hard and highly…

It seems logical to conclude that due to dance teachers and their students interacting at the micro level of society, they are known to have one of the most significant impacts on a dancer's life. To validate this perspective, I observed the infamous dance teacher Abby Lee Miller during Dance Moms Season One to see how she influenced her highly impressionable young dancers. Miller has a very opinionated view of her dancers performances. Second place is not an option! This places an extreme amount of pressure on her dancers to be perfect.…

I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique.
