Dance Personal Statement

There is a cross-like indention near the bottom of my stomachs from where my tights came together and pressed against my skin. I hope it never goes away. For the past fifteen years of my life, I danced in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, and lyrical. This prospect challenged the norms of both the traditional Indian woman and the classic ballerina. Being Indian and dancing in classical ballet rather than in classical Indian dance is simply not done, for it insinuates disrespect for traditional values. As for the classical ballet aspect, the art has favored those who fit the ideal body- arched feet, hyper-extended legs, and, ultimately, fair skin. Of course, there are exceptions for the exceptional, but since I am no Misty Copeland, I take a back seat along with other dancers of color who do not possess divine talents.
Divinity aside, I committed to dance with one goal in mind- to prove that stepping out of traditional roles even on a small scale was worthwhile. For the next few years, I discovered new limits of mental and physical exhaustion with achingly slow results. However, as high school progressed, I began to notice that I was dancing in scattered principal roles and

As I grow, I want to be able to give others the opportunity to feel this. Specifically, I hope to return to India, where both of my parents were born, and establish programs that provide for affordable education for youth in underdeveloped areas. With knowledge comes the power for an individual to make decisions for themselves that can best benefit themselves. This also aids in helping children growing up in struggling families escape the suffocating cycle of poverty. Allowing children with limited resources to pursue their passion and challenge how others define them allows them to reach their full potential and find meaning within

Throughout Copeland’s younger years, her mom was jumping in and out of relationships with different men meaning they were constantly moving around. While Copeland was in the middle of legal disputes between her mom and a dance teacher she said, “It was important to me that I not miss too many days of dance class. So a couple weeks after going back home to Mommy, I was thrilled to be in a studio again, turning my focus back to ballet” (127). This quote explains to the reader how focused Copeland was on ballet as well as how eager she was to get back to ballet just after two weeks off. Furthermore, Copeland stated “Dance was still the center of my life” (133).…

Taking the first part of this chapter, “learning how to dance” is not a straight path traveling forward, but it is more of a journey of discovery and trial and error. For me, occasionally I am very hard on myself and I experience the feeling of “I feel like I’m not getting better at this” or “I feel like I’m getting worse at this”. During our discussion in class on Monday, Professor Hapke stated that Deborah Hayes says that the body…

The purpose of this project is to show that Misty Copeland is changing the way the ballet world defines the correct image and body shape of a ballerina. Copeland does not fit the stereotype of ballerina: she is 5’2, has really defined muscles, has bust, and is African American. She started ballet at the age of 13, late for a dancer, but her pure talent made her into a prodigy. Misty Copeland really set out to become a professional ballerina, regardless of her ethnicity and body shape, she pushed through the obstacles that were set in front of her because she did not have the correct body shape and was not white. She is part of the American Ballet Theater (ABT) and is renowned because she is one of their first African American soloist, and is…

The large speakers that surround the filled room begin to vibrate as the loud unknown voice begins to announce my name. I now know that it is my time to shine. While standing behind the long, red curtains I begin to do what comes natural; lifting my head as if I am looking above and beyond the ceiling that lies above me with a smile projecting from my face, standing tall with strong energy from my toes to the tips of my fingers and pushing my shoulders back to respectfully greet my judges. The adrenaline pounds in my chest, but confidence over powers and I am nothing but ready to entertain my audience. The loud roars of encouraging chanting and cheering rings in my ears as I walk towards the spotlight that gives off a warm radiant heat where I hit my beginning position.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
