Dance Personal Statement

At the Academy for Performing Arts, I gained valuable skills that are vital for my future career. As a dance major, physical and mental endurance is required in order to excel in this field. Everyone enrolled in this major has to be strong and be willing to put in extra time to ace the class. One thing that set me apart from most dancers was that I did not have technique. Many dancers started dancing when they were toddlers. When I was accepted I felt out of place. I started dancing three years earlier at the community YMCA,not a real dance studio unlike other dancers. I faced criticism from my teachers. I was embarrassed to dance in front of my classmates, and even had classmates make rude remarks about me. I blamed my parents for not starting my dance classes when I was younger. This negative situation only motivated me to try …show more content…
Throughout my freshman and sophomore year I spent my study periods going to dance co to work on dances that I struggled with. I asked other dancers for help with movements that I was unfamiliar with. I watched videos over and over to get specific details. This determination made me work harder to try and get my grade up. I learned to take initiative and speak up whenever I needed help. Instead of remaining silent, I addressed the issue at the beginning. The hard work paid off when I was notified to join my teacher’s company and even be a dance tutor. As a junior now, many of my classmates and teachers have seen my growth and improvement. This year I even have a solo in our piece at Mainstage. Being a dance major has ultimately forced me to advocate for myself. I’ve learned to interact with individuals that have different opinions and mindsets. It taught me to persevere and keep trying. These skills are essential for my

Dance is a sport I am very passionate about as I have been dancing for fifteen years. In sixth grade I decided I wanted to be a part of my school’s dance team to spread school spirit and entertain crowds during the halftime of football and basketball games. I have been a member of the Marvin Ridge Dance Teams for seven years, and I have made many friendships and memories that will last forever from being a part of such a wonderful athletic team. Dance team has taught me a great deal about teamwork, dedication, and hardwork. Each of the four years that I have been a member of the Marvin Ridge Varsity Dance Team, we have qualified for the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Florida.…

The fastest way for a performer’s career to end is with an unexpected injury. My freshman year I suffered patella luxation, more commonly known as the dislocation of the kneecap. I was in a full leg brace for a month and a half, then participated in extensive physical therapy over my summer break until I could finally return to dance for my sophomore year at Booker T. Washington. The time I spent unable to dance led me to explore other pathways associated with the arts. Because I was not able to participate in my technique classes I was told to take extensive notes over corrections and the class as a whole; I began to draw connections from the first combination to the last.…

Swerving around a mass sea of students while quickly glancing at my schedule and the classrooms around me, I was a new student trying to find my classes at the large campus of Neuqua Valley High School. Even though it was my junior year, I was a new student after transferring schools and was unfamiliar with the campus and with many of the students there, until I found out about a hip-hop/breakdancing club called Urban Arts Club (UAC). Since I was ten years old, I have always been interested in learning how to breakdance, but I was not able to learn when I lived in Vietnam. After discovering UAC, I anxiously joined the club to learn how to breakdance and to try and become acquainted with the students of the club. As a new member of UAC, I learned the fundamentals of breakdancing, began practicing with the other members, and helped out the current and new members in order…

The three experiences I am evaluating are: a past position I held on my dance team, a previous job I held as a secretary, and a volunteer position I held in a church. I have been dancing the majority of my life and held a senior lieutenant ranking on my dance team. Dance helped me develop an understanding of determination, hard work, and team work. I started the dance team simply as a line member and worked my way up, until I reached a lieutenant ranking. I remember hundreds of early mornings and long nights of practices- all encouraging me to set my goals high and chase them.…

As stated before in our first lecture, dance is a living and fleeting art form. I believe that dance is a living art form because it is a three-dimensional picture to art. What I mean by this is that, art is normally seen on walls or as sculptures, but dance is an amazing opportunity to view art while in movement. If you are anything like me, when I look at a painting of two people or many, I always wonder what it would be like to see them actually dancing, singing, or even laughing. By watching dance, it is my living art form.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

In eighth grade, dance drew me in with the freedom it provides as both a creative outlet and as a way to relax. The flame was sparked by a performance that some friends and I put on for my church for Easter. It was a way for me to be involved in my church, and I did not realize that it was the beginning of a journey that would continue to shape who I am five years later. If anything can be blamed for the “softening” of some of my rough edges, it would be the beginning of my serious commitment to dance. The last five years have only fueled my desire to continue to dance, and drove me to choose it as my minor at GCSU.…
