“Dance of the Banished” by Marsha Skrypuch is an action and love story about a couple who gets separated during WWI, with either one on each side of the war, trying to survive without each other. “Red Leaves” by Sita Brahmachari is about 3 kids struggling with family problems, and run away from home. “Dance of the Banished” would be a better fit for the IB program novel study because it enhances their learning of caring and risk taking, which will be further discussed in the next paragraph. Also, “Dance of the Banished” has more character development and more interesting plotline than “Red Leaves”, including bigger plot twists and a more interesting storyline. For instance, Zeynep, one of the main characters from “Dance of the Banished” is separated from her fiancé Ali. She tries her best to manage without him, but is faithful to him even though they have been separated for years, which shows that she cares a lot for him. She had also shown acts of bravery by risking her life in order to keep her friends and family safe and leave Turkey to go to Canada. The three main characters in “Red Leaves” had run away from home since they couldn’t handle their problems. This had worried all of the people that cared about them, and even made it to the news for their actions. Caring and risk taking are important skills since they are used everyday. For example, talking to someone about how their day was is caring. Raising your hand in class, even if you don’t know the answer is risk taking. In the “Dance of the Banished”, one big plot twist is that Ali had cheated on Zeynep with another girl he had just met, and even stopped writing about it because “she wouldn’t want to hear what would happen next”. One of the biggest plot twist in “Red Leaves” was that Elder, the old, homeless woman had died in the night. Though these are both tragic plot twists, we wonder what happens next with Ali, Zeynep and the girl he was cheating on her with, but we want to know how the city will react in Sita’s book, though this gets answered later in the book. Marsha also makes the plotline in her story more interesting. Her descriptive writing captures the reader’s attention, making them want to read more. However, Sita’s book isn’t as appealing and doesn’t capture the reader’s attention. Marsha also uses a number of new words which can enhance vocabulary, unlike Sita, who uses simpler language. This is why “Dance of the Banished" would be more interesting for the IB students to read, and make them better writers as
