During the lesson, each student could be seen by me at all times due to the specific arrangement I had them standing in on the dance space. This allowed for me to always be paying attention to how each student was behaving, participating, engaging, learning or in need of help. Specific things were observed from particular students throughout the whole activity. Some of these observations were that Ali needed some extra guiding through some of the dance steps, Molita had to be advised about safety to not get in other peoples space and Ethan had to be reminded to stay focus. All of these things were behaviour characteristics identified and were fixed essentially creating a more rich and safe learning area. To help with name recognition, nametags

“Training as the medium through which”, chapter 3, written by Melanie Bales is a chapter that is written on the theme of self-discovery and how as dancers we could apply the ideas to ourselves. Melanie Bales is a professor at Ohio State where she graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy. Bales also studied at the Joffrey School and was a Harkness Ballet Trainee. Throughout this article, I experienced different things for myself when going through and reading each section. Addison Gayle’s main argument is that if Blacks are not angry, then they are not Black, which is seen as de-Americanization. According to the literature from Gayle, “The black artist in the American society who creates without interjecting a note of anger is creating not as a black man, but as an American” (Gayle 1912). The misconception here is how readers view his claim peculiar because Blacks do not always have to be angry to prove that they are Black, as if Gayle is saying that being Black but not angry removes them from blackness. Blacks can be proud and not angry, right? The last thing Whites want to see from the Blacks that is stereotypical is anger because Black people are seen as savages, which is “double consciousness.”…

The school auditorium is filled with proud parents and the glow of several hundred screens poised to capture the moment their precious stars take the stage. The music starts and a dozen little girls and boys start twirling and craning their necks to watch their dance instructor coach them from the wings. Most of their parents aren't concerned with the dance training their children are receiving. A friend of a friend told them about "Dolly Dinkle's Dance Academy" and so they signed little Susie up,bought her a pink leotard, and told her to have fun at dance class. However, "Dolly Dinkle" is not a qualified dance instructor.…

The book that I have chosen to personally read for this class is called “The Dance Experience: Insights into History, Culture and Creativity” written by Myron Howard Nadel. I have been dancing in classes and recitals since I was three years old, and still continue to dance today. I love dancing because it is fun; it helps to relieve stress and allows any individual to use creativity in a diverse, moderate and entertaining way. I particularly chose this book because I wanted to go more in depth on how dance originated and also learn about all the different types of dance present throughout the world today. Each week in reading was dedicated to a different genre of dance that constituted new meanings and contributions to the dance culture.…

Scholars have identified the works of several artists who showed a blend of both the Native American culture and that of Euro-American cultures in their paintings and drawings. For example, in the Shawnee War Dance by Ernest Spybuck 1833-1949, Spybuck shows the dance being performed for an Indian and a non-Indian audience. Spybuck has also embraced a Euro-American style of painting (Judith, 2008). The defined figures and flattened pictorial spaces of the earlier ledger drawings are no longer used as are swapped by sculptural figures and an illusionistic rendering of space similar to the work of 19th century artists such as George Catlin who frequently painted Native Americans. For Native Americans, narrative genre paintings were insignificant way of self-definition.…

Lighting up the Dance Community Let 's face it, technology in the 21st century has influenced an abounding number of things, from how we go about socialising with one another to the simplest tasks like online shopping. It is therefore no surprise that technology has also impacted the performing arts and managed to further integrate technology with the dance communities. Alas, people have witnessed such complexity through the use of technology in two contemporary pieces such as, Gideon Obarzaneks Mortal Engine and the fourth film of the Step Up franchise. First a recap of the new Step up 4 Revolution, it begins with a Miami newcomer, Emily. Emily dreams of becoming a professional dancer, but soon finds herself contemplating joining forces…

Dancing, it is harder than it looks. It does not matter if you are teaching it, learning it, or practicing hard, when it comes to it, at end of the day everyone struggles just as much. Being a dancer, requires a lot of potential, motivation and drive. During the past couple of days, I have had the opportunity to watch beginning dancers, advanced dancers, and instructors who have been dancing for a majority of their life. I had never before seen live dancers, so I was very amused that some of my companions could do the same moves as the actors on the dance films we watch during class.…

    Dance Theatre Observation

I chose to attend the University Dance Theatre rehearsal because I really admire contemporary dance and wanted to watch what the dancers do “behind the scenes,” so to speak. I wanted to better understand the work that goes into the dances instead of just viewing the final piece, which I often do. I chose to watch a Ballet 1 technique class because ballet is a form of dance that I appreciate but never really understood and because ballet contrasts the modern dance rehearsal I viewed. I’ve always believed that ballet was too proper and structured for my liking and represented the human body in a very fake way, too posed and upright. I wanted to watch a class that challenged my beliefs and while I still don’t think ballet is the most enjoyable…

During this time, I felt I was able to confidently encounter, converse, and assist the children with varying subject matters. At this point, the children even felt comfortable enough to ask me for help. Additionally, my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Jessica Diaz, is still extremely helpful and even allows me to teach the students in small-groups. By working in small-groups, I have been able to facilitate learning on an individualized level.…
