Another common way they spread awareness of their cause and mission is by posting “why Wednesdays” on Instagram and using the hashtag #whydmwednesday. Introduction The 17th Annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer was a huge success this year and has been for the past 17 years. I had the opportunity be one of over 400 volunteers for the event, which allowed me to gain skills for my potential future in the field of sport management, and possibly, other related fields. The volunteer sport organization, or the organization that provided the opportunity for the community was the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, which is an organization that creates events and fundraisers in order to support the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Their mission is “ to support the mission of Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital to be one of the best hospitals in the state of Indiana” (bloomingtonhospitalfoundation.org).…

This event was made to acquire donations for members of the school population battling cancer. In days leading up to the event, students would travel to businesses asking for contributions for the cause. During school, offerings were also accepted in a drop off box. The main event was a basketball game between the Hempfield High School men’s team versus the Rec All Stars.…

To be apart of the All Iowa Honor Dance Team is the greatest honor any high school dance team member in the state of Iowa can receive. The honor team is created of 250 girls that outshined the other 500 that auditioned for a spot on the floor. Nothing is more nerve racking than only being allowed two minutes to prove to a panel of judges, without a retry. It’s not a basketball game where a time out can be called and one can try the play again, and if the play fails and the game is lost, another game is right around the corner to try again. This is one chance, one shot that you can’t change.…

During my childhood, I spent an unusual amount of time at construction pads for various reasons, such as friends building new homes and my family looking at new neighborhoods. My father used our time at one of these pads to tie together a lesson. He, in his kind voice, recited First Corinthians 3:11 “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” He went on to tell me how foundations determine the grandness of the structure to come; whether that be physical, spiritual or educational. One day I would like to follow in my father’s footsteps and be a part of the medical community, but to do so I need a well laid foundation to build my medical education upon.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…
