Dance Like There's Nobody Watching Poem Analysis

Living a life unconstrained by restrictions can be both emotionally and physically freeing. There is a poem written by Shelley Barge that explains someone’s attempt to live unconstrained by convention and circumstance. Being able to do whatever you wish, without fear of being different is something that should be strived for. There is a great quote by William W. Purkey that reads “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching. Love like you’ll never be hurt. Sing like nobody’s listening. And live like it’s heaven on earth.” This meaning of this quote is to live life to its fullest and to express yourself without the constant fear of judgement from others. In the past, the common belief was that being gay is a sin to humanity. Being gay can …show more content…
But it is very important that you move past their judgement and harsh words. While creatively empowering, living without restrictions by convention can lead to conflicts with others, especially those in power.

When I was younger, I had a best friend named Jacob. He was quite an ordinary boy, he got good grades, played soccer and had tons of friends. But I could see that Jacob had a secret. You see, Jacob always had a sort of look and feel about him, one that would not generally be associated with a teenage boy. He didn’t care for drinking, or partying or doing dumb boy things. He preferred hanging out with me and my friends. One day in grade nine, Jacob told me that he was gay. I felt honoured that he shared his most important personal information with me. However, I could see tears forming in his eyes and bruises up his arms and legs. Jacob then told me how that morning, he decided to

This was shortly after he told his father. Jacob was recently abandoned by his father and he was trying to cope. Jacob played soccer on one of the best soccer teams of his age. He was a solid defender that scored some great goals. Since the incident involving Jacob’s father, Jacob started to play worse and worse. His coach understood his circumstance and helped him get through. Still heartbroken from the abandonment of his father, Jacob was cut from his team. Out of nowhere, Jacob got a call saying that he was not good enough for the team. I was outraged that the head of our club would do something so indecent to a young man, going through one of the worst moments of his life. The head of our club was a man who, along with Jacobs’s father, was a man born with those same beliefs. Similar to the person mentioned in the poem by Shelley Barge, the head of our club was in a position of authority over Jacob. This power and authority was used to its full extent when Jacob was cut from the soccer team. Jacob respected this man because he was in a place of authority, but this man abused that his power and discriminated against

In Allan Johnson’s The Gender Knot, he summarizes everything I was taught about men and women when he states, after giving a brief list of different traits belonging to a male and female that, “As this (referring to the list) shapes how we think about gender, it creates a great divide, with men on one side and women on the other. So long as everyone buys into the split, whether or not it actually describes them, all can have a relatively clear and stable sense of who they are and what’s what(61).” The definition of being a man or a woman in the world has been terribly molded by the social construct of gender. As a child, I was taught to distinguish men and women by certain factors.…

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history.…

As human beings we fail to remind ourselves that everyone is different and that we should not stare at people, we have to see who they are. I will never forget what Jodi Picoult said in one of her interviews. She writes to children who are different, scared, and may be unpopular that they will find someone who values them, a place to fit in and reminds them that they do not suffer alone. This statement is so powerful because it applies to everyone if Jacob were real; I wonder what these words will motivate him to do. Jodi uses real life situations and writes about them in her unrealistic stories.…

Throughout the poem “Choices” Nikki Giovanni portrays the feelings of how it is to be oppressed and not being able to express because you expressions are the ¨normal¨. In the first stanza Nikki seems to describe that she's grateful that at least she can refuse to do things that she doesn't want to but at the same time she displays that she's unable to speak her mind and do the things she wants. This pattern continues and the poem concludes with Giovanni accepting that she will not be able to express certain things because she is oppressed so she practices being okay only expressing thoughts that are accepted by her oppressors. Giovanni never mentions any specific attributes that caused her to be opressed. This is due to her mission that the…
