Dance Is Not A Sport

A dancer hears it all the time, “Dance is not a sport.” As a dancer for fifteen years, I have heard this saying numerous times. The dictionary defines a sport as, “An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.” (“Sport”). Dance is a physically exerting activity and is sometimes competed against other teams or individuals to. Many football players are even told to take ballet as it helps in their flexibility and be able to be quick on their feet. The definition of sport clearly defines dance, so why do people still not consider it a sport?
