During the beginning of the 20th century, Native American tradition, art, and culture was suppressed by governmental bans of Native American customs. One of the commonly misunderstood forms of these Native American customs is dance, which plays a significant role in Indigenous tradition. It was viewed at the time as threatening and hostile as many referred to Indigenous dance as a “war dance” without understanding that each dance holds different importance's. The bans of these kinds of cultural expressions ultimately leads to the decline of knowledge and possible extinction of tradition. In book Reginald and Gladys Laubin, American Indian Dancers by Starr Jones, Reginald and Gladys Laubin, married cultural historians, decide to partake in…
Hi Pentavalli, I really like the idea of being able to associate dance with certain countries. However, I think due to the globalization it is definitely becoming harder to associate a certain dance with a country or certain group of people. For example, the belly dance cannot be particularly associated with any country due to how widespread it is. Furthermore, the Orientalist's constant appropriation of dance forms of the Orient contributes to this. I also have to agree with you in terms of dance leading to social changes in the Ottoman empire.…
In the article called, “Five Premises for a Culturally Sensitive Approach to Dance,” written by Deidre Sklar. She discussed about the five premises that a person should know if they wanted to understand the culture of a dance. The article could help readers analyze the movement in a piece of dance and understand how it could be related to a culture. This essay will discuss about the Native American Sun Dance using three of the premises from Deidre Sklar. Those premises are one has to look beyond movement to get at its meaning, movement knowledge is a kind of cultural knowledge and movement knowledge is conceptual and emotional as well as kinesthetic.…
Defining what American culture is today can be somewhat difficult in today’s society. American culture is always fluctuating. The United States has traditionally been referred to as a "melting pot," welcoming people from many different countries, and hoping to find a better means of life. However, others refer it to as a “Salad”; the ingredients are there, but not everything mixes well. America is full of rich culture, but not every person living in America understands cultures besides their own.…
Music and dance have played a vital role in culture over many years, and still does today. Through many years music and dance have helped Native American and African-American culture survive, persevere, and thrive. They have preserved their culture, and their music/dance is a constant reminder of what each culture has faced and overcome. Their music/dances are alive today, and are appreciated by many. Native Americans and African-Americans have been fighting to preserve their culture since Americans tried to take it away.…
The way this dance was, you had to enter the ballroom floor with a specific way of stepping to the beat using your heels, but also like ice skating in a way. Dancing wasn’t as easy as it is now, well for some people. Some other types of dances were Jigs and reels, which as I mentioned before enslaved people and lower class white people would use these methods of dancing, but so did the Virginians. When you would dance “Jigs” it required to only dance with one person and partner, for the “Reels” you could have as much as six people dancing. When it came to teaching and learning the dance, it wasn’t as easy as it seemed.…

I’m sure you connected it to the African American culture as well. This is right. Step dance is very significant within the African American community as a whole. Of course, it happens to be more concentrated amongst fraternities and sororities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Since its…
Scholars have identified the works of several artists who showed a blend of both the Native American culture and that of Euro-American cultures in their paintings and drawings. For example, in the Shawnee War Dance by Ernest Spybuck 1833-1949, Spybuck shows the dance being performed for an Indian and a non-Indian audience. Spybuck has also embraced a Euro-American style of painting (Judith, 2008). The defined figures and flattened pictorial spaces of the earlier ledger drawings are no longer used as are swapped by sculptural figures and an illusionistic rendering of space similar to the work of 19th century artists such as George Catlin who frequently painted Native Americans. For Native Americans, narrative genre paintings were insignificant way of self-definition.…
Rock and Roll began with jazz, blues, folk, and gospel, and from there, it has morphed into the almost all-encompassing classification that we label the genre today. Throughout the history of Rock and Roll music, it has been an example of evolution, not just in the music industry, but in American culture. The history of Rock and Roll is intertwined with our nation’s history, oftentimes being a catalyst for our country's progress. Today, Rock and Roll exists as a beautiful collection of sounds and styles, much of which can be traced back to women who chose to stand out from the crowd. Billie Holiday, one of the earliest influences in Rock and Roll, helped lay the foundation for this musical genre.…
