When I was young, I was always up on my feet and moving. No matter the activity I was involved in or what hobby I took interest in, I would find a way to choreograph little routines and show them to my friends and family. My parents tried to put me in sports, I would do cartwheels and dance on the playing fields, completely oblivious to what was going on during the games. In 5th grade, I was put into my first dance class as a hobby. This happened all because I watched the Disney Channel movie High School Musical and immediately fell in love with it. I showed the movie to my parents and told them, “This is what I want to do.” At the time I thought I excelled in both signing and acting and that all I needed were dance classes. So I started that year with just one dance class where I began to scratch the surface of the basics of dance. I started my training at small family owned studio, the classes offered were classic jazz, lyrical and basic ballet. This met my hunger for learning to dance. My dance training was very sheltered and if not for opportunities outside of the studio I would have never learned about modern and contemporary dance styles. I was introduced to concert dance my freshman year at Booker T. …show more content…
I discovered that I was able to use dance as an outlet to express my thoughts and feelings much more clearly than I had ever been able to before. While other students were comfortable conveying their ideas through speaking and writing, I would struggle to even write a few sentences. I finally found a way to communicate through dance, it gave me such a liberating feeling of release. This is when I felt empowered and gained confidence through dancing. This sense of certainty drives me to push forward and to always find something new in my dancing. I would put in the work day in and day out and every time I performed, it would all become so incredibly worth

Also every Sunday when I was suppose to practice I didn’t want to go I just wanted to hang out with my friends. This stage of me thinking I was to cool lasted about till 7th grade. During my 8th grade year I broke out of my shell and I started enjoying it again and I know longer cared what people thought of me because this was for the kids. My initial thoughts and impressions upon viewing the film Rize were of amazement at how athletic the dancers were, of shock at the environment they were surrounded by, and of being impressed by their creative use of dance to overcome their environment. Having a dance background, myself, I was fascinated at their strong popping movements and the use of raw energy and immense power. This was not the dance I was taught growing up. Initially, I was struck by the determination shown in the dancers faces; like their bodies, chiseled as smooth stone, into the expressions on their faces. The film cleared up a misconception of mine as well; the misconception that Hip Hop and Rap were the same, or having the same origins.…
