Dance Alabama is a program through the dance department that gives students of all majors to try out and participate in a dance production. It is generally students that grew up and danced throughout their childhood and high school years. The audition process is competitive so it is an honor for the performers that were chosen for this production. Some chosen continued to study dance at the university and others decided to pursue other interests but still have a passion for dancing. They participate in practices and rehearsals for months to prepare for this week of performances. The 30 pieces that they perform all reflect different topics and interests, some dancers perform in just one piece while others appear in several. This show is a good …show more content…
One of my good friends was in it and it reflects personalities and ideals of students on our campus so I felt like it was a perfect cultural event to attend. All the performances were choreographed by students which gives them amazing opportunities to show off not only their dancing talents but their ability to create pieces that speak to audiences through movements and sound. I enjoyed the show and the thought as well as the creativity that it took to choreograph and prepare each individual piece. One that initially stood out to me was “Thanks Mom and Dad”, which was a hip hop solo performed by a guy. The guy who danced also happened to be the choreographer which just made it even more personal and emotional. He walked out with headphones in and did a tap routine along to the music that was playing in his headphones. The sound and body movements along with his facial expressions combined reflected the creativity and seemed to take a lot of patience and rhythm to prepare. Another one that caught my attention was “Rags & Ritches”. It seemed to be based off of Vegas show girls and was very fun and

In the beginning and at the end they played some old Italian type music as the dancers moved as one person and this gave the impression of a sort of warm family vibe throughout this section. There was also an instance of an extremely loud and almost uncomfortable sound during a portion in the middle which allowed the mood of the audience to switch to disturbed or uneasy, which was simultaneously reflected in their dancing and movements on and off the main “dancing portion” of the stage. A powerful instance which occurred a couple times was when the music shut off completely and there was only the audiences breathing, and the heavy panting of the dancers that could be heard throughout the theatre. This clearly intentional choice not only made the concept intriguing, but it allowed the audience to a feel a level of connect and grounding with the dancers as well. Much of the music reflected the different colour changes on screen as it was more serene during the cloud projection, but it was fast and very loud when the screen went to red.…

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, now located on West 55th Street and 9th Avenue in New York City, traces its roots to a choreographer who interwove modern dance, jazz, and African rhythms in creations such as Revelations. A spectacular work that audiences have been worshiping for almost fifty…

The two clips I chose to compare and contrast were an NYC jazz and contemporary company’s performance of “Steam Heat” choreographed by Lisa Donmall-Reeve and Lindsey’s Stirling’s performance of a Les Miserables medley. Both clips exhibited a high degree of musicality and grabbed my attention almost immediately. They incorporated lighting and costuming with an incredible mastery to enrich the performance. I highly enjoyed the music that accompanied both dances and thought that the choreography worked well with the music. While both works of art have incredibly interesting and complex choreographic elements there are important dissimilarities as well as points of comparison.…

As the piece progressed, this formation did not vary, other than to switch lines. Once on stage, I would describe the music to be happy, lively and carnival like. The dancers threw confetti onto the audience and began their overly dramatic variations of shimmying and hip thrusting. These movements were highly sexualized as each seemed to have been choreographed in order to make the dancer’s body shake. The dancers constantly switched between frontal and backward facings, displaying the entirety of the female body.…

The music concert 9066 Music Behind Barbed Wire was the ending cumulation of the events done throughout the semester to honor the 75th anniversary of Manzanar. Inside the university theatre the crowd was coming in, soon the theater was packed with a variety of people from the community and students. The evening event started fifteen minutes late, and then we were welcomed by the Dean of the college of arts and humanities Mitch Avila. He discussed how throughout the semester they had several guest speakers and field trips to Manzanar and stressed how it was important to remember how many Japanese American were incarnation. After that the program began with Coco Mori a student from the Calle Mayor Middle School, she performed The Star Bangled Banner and it was amazing to find that the audience was singing along with her.…

The details of the cues were extremely meticulous. While the color palette for the piece was primarily blues and greens, there were so many variations on the tint and shade. Furthermore, I saw how the shape of the light hid or exposed different parts of the dance. I noticed that there often wasn’t an immediate change in the lighting when a cue was called, but instead multiple cues spread out over time could add up to slowly create a dramatic change. Each cue was timed down to the exact millisecond.…

Unforgettable with Stephanie Aaron and the Bradley Jazz Ensemble was a very unique experience. I do not attend many concerts, but the ones that I have gone to were nothing like this one. The concert was full of energy and the lighting was dynamic. I mostly went to traditional concerts, but this jazz concert was much more energetic. When musicians would finish a solo the crowd would applaud and there was a lot of movement among the ensemble.…

I attended the MTSUU Jazz Artist Series at MTSU on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 7:30 pm. The instrument amount was varied, but the expected Jazz instruments were all there: stand-up bass, piano, horn section, drums, etc. All of the woodwind players played different instruments throughout each piece. It was held in the T. Earl Hinton Music Hall in the Wright Music Building. Around 130 people were there.…

As stated before in our first lecture, dance is a living and fleeting art form. I believe that dance is a living art form because it is a three-dimensional picture to art. What I mean by this is that, art is normally seen on walls or as sculptures, but dance is an amazing opportunity to view art while in movement. If you are anything like me, when I look at a painting of two people or many, I always wonder what it would be like to see them actually dancing, singing, or even laughing. By watching dance, it is my living art form.…
