Dance has taught me perseverance. When I started at my new dance studio, Royal Dance Academy, I was placed in a class with dancers who were my age but have better dancing abilities than my own. I felt intimated as the dancers performed multiple pirouettes, also known as turns, while I was still working on my single pirouette. Rather than looking at this moment in a negative way, I looked at it as an opportunity to grow and learn from talented individuals. After all, you can only grow by being with people better than yourself. As one of the oldest dancers at the studio today, I still look up to dancers older and younger than me to see how I can improve myself because there is no end to improvement but only continuous growth. …show more content…
It is not easy to be in a leotard and tights all day with teachers picking at every imperfection. The typical dancer body consists of long legs, beautiful arched feet and a skinny waist. As for myself, I am a dancer who is on the shorter side in height with thicker thighs and a shorter torso; it is hard to be compared to the prima ballerinas. When I was 15 years old, this took a huge toll on my confidence as I was receiving constant comments from my teacher to go on a diet and to exercise more. I began to drown in my own pity of self-consciousness as I felt like I was a horrible dancer.
