Saturday mornings I’d watch her slip on her tap shoes and flaunt her new dance moves she learned at dance class. I quickly acquired a pair for myself to copy her. We clanked, shuffled, and stomped, enjoying the various sounds our feet produced.
Those Saturdays disappeared to mere memories once my sister was diagnosed with leukemia. She was isolated in a hospital bed for almost three years. Knowing that dance was her dream, I continued taking classes, learning as much as I could, and teaching her from her hospital bed until the day she was acclaimed cancer free.

Throughout Copeland’s younger years, her mom was jumping in and out of relationships with different men meaning they were constantly moving around. While Copeland was in the middle of legal disputes between her mom and a dance teacher she said, “It was important to me that I not miss too many days of dance class. So a couple weeks after going back home to Mommy, I was thrilled to be in a studio again, turning my focus back to ballet” (127). This quote explains to the reader how focused Copeland was on ballet as well as how eager she was to get back to ballet just after two weeks off. I attended the St. Ambrose University Dance Company Performance in the Rogalski Center Ballroom on Sunday, April 15th at 2pm. The dance company is a club here at St. Ambrose for students who may not have the time to fully commit to the dance team here at St. Ambrose. However, these individuals all share the love for dancing. Through this club they are able to continue to do so and practice dance without such a big time commitment. Although the time commitment is not as much, these six individuals; Rhett Koterba, Delaney Powers, Meagin Sichterman, Kaylin Sarver, Twyla Pereira and Libby Miller work incredible hard all year long to choreograph these beautiful pieces to perform for events like their showcase in the Rogalski Ballroom.…

One, two, one, two… Dancing is all about rhythm and timing. However, dancing is much more than the mechanics; it is an expression of emotion and art. Being able to evoke such strong emotions and feelings by the movements one makes with their body can be a transforming experience. Whether it be slow, fast, simple or complicated, dancing has a way of telling a story; an unspoken story that can make a person reflect on themselves.…

A nice way to start out my childhood. It was about ten years ago, when I was three, when I came to realize that I had to be more careful. Since I was two years old, until I was five, I took dance lessons. At the studio, there were multiple classes for different levels and for different styles of dance; every year every dance class in the studio would get together and have a recital. It was the day of the recital, and I was more than ready to perform.…

Dance, for centuries, has “been used as communication between the body and the soul,” says Ruth St. Denis, Oriental-modern dancer and mentor of Martha Graham. Throughout the widespread genres of dance, there is always a rich background and purpose. Modern dance, one of the most recently recognized genres, can take many forms, while Dance du Ventre, or belly dancing, has a more narrow variety of moves. However, both have a deep rooting in women’s history and represent the value of a woman and her body. Modern dance stems from the revolution against ballet and other strict genres which discriminated against women of larger body types and didn’t allow for much emotional expression.…

Sitting in my bed, at 2:30 in theisre morning, constantly backspacing what I have originally written, I am stuck wondering what I should write about for my personal statement. That is the golden question of most, if not all, applicants applying to law school. What can I write about that explains what it is that made me want to pursue law school, what makes me stand out from other applicants, and most importantly, what showcases the kind of individual I am? I could talk about what an exemplary student I am, how I am graduating with honors and a double major, or even talk about the several internships I have held, and so on. However, everything that I have mentioned, one is able to see on my transcripts and resume, and, after all, I am more…

Dancing in the Spotlight Standing in the spotlight is a very frightening, gut-wrenching accomplishment. Dancing alone in the spotlight can be even more so. I experienced dancing in the spotlight two years ago, when I played the part of Clara in the Nutcracker. Of course, it all started with dance, or rather, without dance. My mom was driving me to the studio, but I was not feeling well, so she strode inside to inform my teacher I was unable to dance that day.…

My parents never anticipated me to fall in love with dance the way I did. From the youthful age of four till this day at age eighteen, dance has always been something I am remarkably passionate about. Out of everything I ventured into – soccer, cheerleading, gymnastics – dance was the one that stuck. “Mommy, is today a ballet day?” grew into a daily question when I got picked up from elementary school. It was something I became unusually infatuated with, I yearned to be around dance as often as possible because I just could not get enough of it.…
